Re: Junipers At Needles Overlook

It's like getting several painting styles in one, where none competes nor intrudes on the other. The sky wash is terrific and the leaves lay nicely in the foreground over it. The twisting, organic qualities of the stones and the junipers is wonderful and it looks like you had fun with this one. Well done!

Beautiful painting! Gouache or not, it is the end result that counts

Amazing details that I find fascinating. Very unusual roots, tree trunks and rocks. You did a wonderful job on this and you should be proud.

Fabulous detail work that absolutely breathes life into the scene. You captured the essence of the place perfectly.

Wish I could do that, but I would have to save up my daily patience allocation for a month.

Thank you all so much for the wonderful comments, I'm honored. More paintings coming soon.

Well, 20 hours really isn't all that long, I don't think, especially when you spread it out over a week. Some days I'll paint for ten hours straight. Other days, I may only paint a couple of hours or even not at all. This one was spread out over almost two weeks. I generally have several paintings going at once. That prevents me from getting either too bored or too frustrated. I'f I'm feeling unusually inspired and the work is going well, I'll tear through it in no time. After I botched the sky on this one, I almost wrote it off as a loss, but decided to give it a few days of rest, after which I attacked it and managed to somewhat save it. I'll know how successful I was if it's still hanging in the gallery after several months on the wall. ;-)

Heheh, thanks, Kos. This painting, however, will mark the last studio painting that I do with the little Koi box, as I've replaced it with a set of Daniel Smith watercolors, which are far richer in pigment and luminosity than the Koi cakes, which are actually just student grade and are, comparatively, rather dull and lifeless. They were, however, all I had at the time and I've always argued that skills always override the tools (but the better the tools, the greater the potential for higher quality work). The Koi set will now serve as my plein air watercolor kit and I can eventually replace the Koi cakes with the DS tubed watercolors and keep the little kit, which is awesome.

Cheers and thanks again, everyone,

...actually it not the brushes, you work is phenomenal. The texture on the cedars is so complimentary to the outcropping of stone. Wonderful, Wonderful composition!
