Re: Oil-from-life challenge, Jan. 2018: optional winter theme

My job has me busier for the next couple of months, but I managed to sneak in a couple hours of painting yesterday. I hope to do more this weekend. This is my ongoing still-life project. Now I think it needs yet another object on the right. I'll never finish!

I do seem to paint faster when I'm doing landscapes and portraits. I seem to fuss forever with the ellipses in still lifes. :\ Working title now is "Odds and Ends," oil on linen, 14" x 18."

Grotius, I like the progress on your still life. Paint is very rich.

Thanks, Moscatel!

I assume it's too cold for you to get outside where you are. Are you working on any still lifes?

Great set up Carol and a good result, nice composition that holds the whole painting together Arnada, a good study Geoff and the painting is starting to take shape.

Just finished this and opened the the bottle as a winter tipple

Are natural oil paints difficult to make and paint with?

No, it's warm, there's no snow either. I'm waiting for it! It's the global warming, it must be. The weather is grazy: New York is full of snow (or was little while back) the northern US & Canada snow storms and terrible cold and here I'm walking with summer clothes! I want snow!
I've been painting big cats and they are from photos. Was recently also working, earning money and with a flu but thinking of getting back to still lifes and daily painting from life .. until the snow comes, of course.

Journeyman, love it. Excellent work!

Dave, that's a great painting! I love the cast shadow of the bottle -- the subtle color shifts are really neat. The hammer draws the eye, too. And I'm glad to hear you got a tipple out of the arrangement! I really hope you consider posting more of your (uniformly excellent) work in this thread, even if you also post it elsewhere; otherwise I might miss it!

Sid and Moscatel, I'll keep my fingers crossed for your snow! I'd happily lend you some of our cold weather. :\

lmundiclan, I'm sorry, I don't know the answer to your question. You might try posting your question in the technical sub-forum.

I'm hoping to see the Vermeer show at the National Gallery tomorrow...

Hi Geoff, it’s a great thing you have going here, working directly is very important for learning to look so I’m happy to post here as I grasp seeing .

This is this afternoons effort, layed up tools for the winter .

Hope to buy some flowers tomorrow and see if I can come up with a more conventional still life later in the week.

Dave.

Re: Oil-from-life challenge, Jan. 2018: optional winter theme

Wow, Carol and Dave -- you're turning this into a Master class in still lifes!

Dave, I think you own the sub-genre of Still Lifes Involving Tools! I am so impressed with the wood and metal textures of your latest post. How in the world do you work so quickly? It would take me all afternoon to work (and overwork) on just one of those objects. I know, it takes practice: when I'm painting every day, I do start working more quickly. And drawing every day helps a lot. In any case, color me impressed! I hope you keep posting, because I am learning a lot from your work.

Carol, that pitcher is just luscious! You have no fear about tackling the patterns on a piece of ceramics like that. Me, I'm always afraid the patterns won't "read" correctly, and I tend to simplify or omit them. Also, the highlight (and lighting in general) is so convincing. I'm also interested in the soft edge on the left side of the pitcher -- including reflected red light. Is this how you saw it, or did you embellish the reflected light? I might ask the same question I asked Dave -- how do you work so quickly?!

Incidentally, I loved the show on Vermeer & Masters of Genre Painting at the National Gallery. I've written about it in my latest blog post here: https://www.geoffwatsonart.com/blog/...genre-painting

Great paintings Dave and Carol, I am a woodworker too.
It did snow here and I have a scene looking out from my living room window in progress now, no way I'm going out in this deep freeze.
