You're eye for detail is astounding, your patience is that of a saint and this intricate work is a most wonderful example of its genre.

Thanks! Usually I post around the second week of the month. Had some issues last month and the holidays but I should be back on schedule now

Thanks sno, having a painfully slow time working on the glass vase and its reflections and imperfections, looks kinda goofy now but when the vase is all done, it'll come together.

Thanks so much ianuk my friend, this will be my most detailed and favorite painting yet, so much fun stuff to do and I'm actually proud of just thinking of the subject matter, setting up the still life and getting it on canvas. If only the reference pix that I took were better…

I think challenging yourself the way you do with each new work and, with the success of that work. You can move forward to even more challenges with confidence. I'm sure you learn such a lot with each new painting, and the photography. I'll be back to see the finished article, Alan.

I'm glad you've noticed, Ian. Every painting takes me longer to create, as they get progressively bigger, more intricate, and in this case, have more objects. Not to mention the composition aspect, I really put a lot of attention into drawing your eye around the painting to keep you looking at it longer.

There are some textural elements in this painting that I've never even tried to tackle before, lemon skin/flesh, the kiwis/strawberry flesh, and others. More objects, different objects, and paying particular attention to composition is how I've challenged myself with this one.

Thanks again for your comments

Wow. This mix of a traditional still life and the very contemporary star wars stuff. Both clever and funny. It also has some very deliberate challenges like that Storm Trooper begging for help. Painting the glaze on top of that is going to be interesting! And your technique is great, I am really looking forward to see the finished picture!

Thank you Ola, much appreciated. The secret is to plan and not be in such a rush. I get confused with all the threads here asking about quicker drying, quicker finishing, quicker everything but not getting quality - only doing everything 'faster'. I know right off what I'm going to do will take many months, maybe even over a year, but when it's done I get (mostly) amazement from people, (usually) awards, and (just recently) a big, satisfying paycheck.

Thanks again for the kind words!

Thank you Luis and I'm very glad you appreciate the mixture of classic still life and a modern, humorous element. It took me weeks to think up and plan this still life, and when I realized I wanted to put the stormtroopers in it as a light hearted humorous element I knew I had a winning concept. I believe this will probably be the first in a series, as I (and many others, thankfully) really get a kick out of these goofy toys helping me out in various painting situations.

Thanks again!

Cheers,
=A=

Its coming along great Alan! I swear one of these days I’m burning two weeks of vacation time and coming out to spend a week just standing there watching over your shoulder and then heading to Arizona to watch over Bills shoulder. You are such an inspiration my friend. Keep up the great work

Re: 'My Own Personal Minions', a new WIP

Haha, Alan,
I often think of you working away patiently in some dark attic in Orange County...
you are really a great and inspiring example to make people try harder and longer,
to be more steady and patient...

I wonder how you feed yourself while the work comes together?

I had a big project which took six months once, a commission, and I organised
three progress payments, but because I had to feed my family the first three months until the first cheque was very tight...

Unless an artist saves up and is dedicated to financing a long project, it's usually having to do some time-wasting day job to keep funding the daily bread...
The classic problem of artists battling it out until they become famous after they die is how to pay for necessary stuff while they create...

But nowadays, as long as you can keep paying for the internet connection, at least you have company

Working away in a sunny living room, actually
Thanks for the kind words, I really do try to show people that with time, effort, patience, and persistence you can really accomplish things that you never thought possible, at least in terms of art.

Hope to have an update in a few weeks, been working on the vase and all the fun glass reflections/distortions. Cheers!
