New Video: Classic Water Painting Techniques for Watercolor and Oil

In Quinten Gregory's Professional Realism 2 video, playing now on ArtistsNetwork.tv, he uses a variety of references and step-by-step demonstrations to give you the skills you need to create dramatic water paintings no matter what your medium. Follow along with the full-length video to learn how to paint a clear, still lake in watercolor to focus on reflections and depth; choppy river water in watercolor to focus on waves; a gentle river in oil to focus on light effects; and a small stream to focus on fast, running water.

In this preview from Quinten Gregory's Professional Realism 2, Quinten paints gentle waves and smooth water on a river to show you how to paint reflections and light effects. Visit ArtistsNetwork.tv for access to the full length version of this video.

Re: New Video: Classic Water Painting Techniques for Watercolor and Oil

I have enjoyed watching the Quinten Gregory Video on painting water showing his process in both water color and oil. Even though I do not paint this realistically I have picked up several good tips. I love his soft blending technique with the oils and long sable brushes which he uses on edge and broadside. Not sure what his oil medium mixture consists of. Learned more of an appreciation for Cadmium orange, Sap Green and paynes gray in oil and WC.
What can you tell me about the frame he has around his water color as he works on the painting. I have not been able to find many of his paintings on line to determine how he eventually frames a water color.
My uncle went to art school in the early 50's and his paintings look similar.
Wish I could have watched. Any additional technical info would be appreciated. Thanks for the free weekend preview. Diane

Hi Diane,
So glad you are enjoying the Quinten Gregory videos and the ArtistsNetwork.tv FREE Trial Weekend.

I have a message into Quinten's son to see if he can help answer your question about framing.

All best,
Jennifer

Re: New Video: Classic Water Painting Techniques for Watercolor and Oil

Jennifer.
I had a chance to watch the Quinten Gregory video on Skies. At about 15 minutes in, Quinten explains his method of putting WC paper in metal frame prior to painting. He wets 300# paper for about 15 minutes, puts it on piece of masonite cut to the same size as WC paper. Then he fits metal frame around the masonite and WC paper. He puts wedges in the back to tighten the fit. He says the WC is always flat after he takes it out of the frame. So this is Quinten's version of a WC paper stretcher. I am going to get some metal frame edges and give it a try.
Again for me this was an excellent video of WC and oil techniques for skies.
Thanks for the free weekend viewing offer. It helps me to decide what books to buy. Diane

Hi Diane,
Quinten's son had another similar inquiry just a few days ago. He'll let us know what he finds.

All best,
Jennifer
