Beautiful Rural Sunset

I snapped this pic just east of my hometown tonight. The beam going up through the center is what really caught my eye. I was driving down the road and had to pull over and get the camera out. Hope you like it, thanks for taking a look! ~Jeff

Re: Beautiful Rural Sunset

Jeff, the colors here are spectacular but the beam of light you caught in this image is really special. You rarely see something like this. It would have been difficult to describe this to someone had they not seen it.

WOW! It's not often one can shoot a sun pillar!! I have seen only one or two in my lifetime! Nice catch! We had a similar sunset with pretty pinks, minus the sun pillar, of course, but I was busy without camera in hand. Glad you caught it!

"Sun Pillar", never heard that term.
I remember when Sue (moccasin) used the word "Sundog", do you remember that ? They are probably more common than a Sun Pillar. I have seen the Sun Dogs, but never a Pillar.

Sun dog - Wikipedia
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sun_dog

A sun dog (or sundog) or mock sun, formally called a parhelion (plural parhelia) in meteorology, is an atmospheric optical phenomenon that consists of a bright spot to the left and/or right of the Sun. ... Sun dogs are best seen and most conspicuous when the Sun is near the horizon.

Yes, we have sun dogs quite often! Sometimes only visible on one side, but sometimes both sides! Sure miss Sue!!

Re: Beautiful Rural Sunset

Thank you Lorell, it's the first time I've seen anything like that.

Thanks Natalie, now I'll know what to call it. It was a new one for me.

Thank you Mike, I appreciate you taking a look!

Re: Beautiful Rural Sunset

Thank you Doug, it really was something to see.

Thanks for taking a look Mary.

Dave and Rich, thanks for taking a look! This is the first time I've seen anything like it. I had no idea it even had a name, until Natalie told me.
