Jeanne's October Sketchbook in a month

Ok here it is- I sketched this from a picture I took Thursday from a local plant nursery. I really have to work at sketching, and I actually had to do the grid system from old school days (a very long time ago;-) I used a Pentalic Nature Sketchbook size 7" x 5". I bought a set of 12 Inktense wc pencils(wow are these nice!) along with my Graphitints were my paints of choice. I would normally use Winsor Newton when painting, but these are great for sketching while at work. I have included the reference pix that I worked off of below~

I love that bush, you nailed it

I still have to use the grid system. I use a program called Oil Painting assistant to print out pics with grids... helps a lot

It's ok to use the grid method. Even the "old masters" used something like that to get accurate renderings. I can see why the plants caught your eye, they are very striking. Nicely done.

Good stuff Jeanne! Use whatever means you feel necessary - some people say it is not right to use photos but I am sure Michelangelo and Leonardo would have used them if they had them! The important thing is you are being creative and learning new stuff all the time - have fun, you have made a great start!

Very nice, Jeanne! Glad to see you join in. Definitely not your average shrub... .

This is a FANTASTIC shrub Jeanne!!!!!! LOVE the colours and subtle shading.

As for using grids, when it comes to paintings or drawings, I use them, and some times including in the journal (or a lightbox!). Basically it doesn't matter the method you get the basics down, it's what you do with it then that counts. And this COUNTS, it's GORGEOUS!!!!!!

Gentle Hugs, Stacey

Wow! I love the twisted shrub and the way you painted it with Inktense. Those pencils are great and what you did with them is spectacular. Grids are no biggie, what you did was interpretive and painterly. It's just a technique.

This is a great start to your sketchbook Jeanne. You've achieved good form and color with your Inktense pencils. Inktense are wonderful aren't they - I love them as well, and use them lots.
