Re: Poll: Working on an easel, drawing board or tabletop?
OK!
Look no hands!!
That's with very light foam board with painting in progess (the only thing I have done this week) Probably works better with ply and having palette and water in your lap wouldn't be the best idea!
Cheers

Tred, your inventiveness is amazing! Well done! And the painting it does looks quite good. Will it do greens and yellows as well...?
Little joke!
Sling it!

Re: Poll: Working on an easel, drawing board or tabletop?
Virgil,
You're not looking! It has done greens and yellows; it mixes on the paper although I wish it had choosen cerulean instead of cobalt for the boat interiors - probably needs new AAA batteries.
Caryl,
Improvisation is needed here. The lengths of aluminium tubing were salvaged from a pair of CD stands like this one:-
I paid about $20 for each tower years ago not the 30 euro price they're asking now. I have used the rods for a mahl stick and an extension for my Best Brolly (the BB rods are exactly the same - same length, same thread) and the laptop easel.
So the recipe is:- Three of the rods a screw with the same thread and a clip with holes of a smaller diameter than the rod.It packs in my sketching satchel which is a Scaramanga 16" in polished tan http://www.scaramangashop.co.uk/wide...g/prod_24.html (they do some nice journals too) together with an A4 sketch pad, field box, pencils and brushes even water and a container if you haven't got water brushes. The clip on the laptop easel keeps the sketchbook open. The easel can, of course be placed at any angle
Cheers

That's awesome, Tred! I wonder if I can get my husband to make one out of the many walking sticks he has made...

Re: Poll: Working on an easel, drawing board or tabletop?
I have built a few easels but just can't control the brushes. So for me it's on the table, flat, and rest my wrist ..it gives my sleeves an opportunity to smudge up fresh paint.

Re: Poll: Working on an easel, drawing board or tabletop?
I use an Easel that my husband made for me. It goes flat for drawing and watercolours, and goes through whatever angle you wish depending on what Medium you are using. For example when using Soft Pastels and you want to avoid unwanted Pastel Dust falling down the board and onto your nice fresh colours, it can actually tilt forward. Allowing the Pastel Dust to fall away from your work. I tend to use a Dust Sheet under my Easle when using Soft Pastels.
If you go to my threads CJMonty, you should be able to find one with some photographs of it in there.
Take Care, Carolynn.

I have used a hiking pole with a bulldog clip tied on.
It works just as well
But it is still more limited than a tripod
I find I do not save much weight

Re: Poll: Working on an easel, drawing board or tabletop?
I've begun to use an adjustable drawing/painting board that goes from flat to several inches of raised height. I usually place it at the lowest height but even that is steep for me. It has two strong clips at the top. The one disadvantage is that it is wood and therefore heavy.
I am accustomed to working flat and I want to learn how to paint at an angle.

ps-sorry the pics are so large. I couldn't figure out how to make them smaller.

Re: Poll: Working on an easel, drawing board or tabletop?
The wave painting looks like you do pretty well, regardless of paper inclination. Congratulations.
Letting gravity and the water participate in your painting can be a lot of fun. Just don't forget to turn the paper when the flow has gone far enough. I think it may have been John Singer Sargent who said "watercolor is making the best of an emergency!"
Sling paint,
Virgil
