Sure Elaine. I'm sorry it took so long to respond, I haven't checked the forum in a while.
When I do a digital painting, I always start with the basic shapes, and add the details into each one on a different layer. After I get each piece the way I want it, I put them together almost like a puzzle. This allows me to get the small details.
If you could see the WiP for this piece, you could see that I worked on each part of the sketch (eyes, leaf, body, etc.) very large to get the details correct, and then made them smaller as I put them into place.
