Dave- I start by drawing a box around the subject. But, navels are good too.

Here's a great clip describing the method I'm using. The instructor demonstrates how to use a mirror and even has one of those clever accents.

I like what you have done with the man doing the landscaping work. When working on "inventing" much of it, what were you thinking about? How were you deciding what to put where?

Also, nice work with the figure poses, in stable static poses it can be challenging to give them a sense of mood or drama, but I feel that how you have captured the light has done so.

Thanks Delo- I was thinking about proportion rules in loomis’ illustration books. I worked out the details through trial and error mostly after the worker was gone. I spent about an hour tinkering with it. Hopefully I can work fastest next time.

Here’s some more progress on the current long pose. -E

Earl, sorry for not responding sooner, I broke my computer when upgrading the memory, bad eyesight and shaking hands don't help. I had to order parts online and wait for delivery no drone deliveries here in my part of the world.

I am impressed with your drawing skills even if you started back again rusty it all comes back with practice. I think the work you did with the labourer is outstanding seeing as how you figured it out with many modifications, you are becoming a serious artist.

I'm not a big fan of sight size as taught today and I prefer measuring by eye, it is difficult at first but becomes natural over time. The Repin art school teach their students to measure by eye from the beginning. Both systems can give you accuracy with practice the danger with sight size is the same danger all academic art faces and that is the lack of a creative response. Some people prefer the academic model but I think the Russians turn out better figure artists.

Earl you have found another way to make figure drawings and it will continue to boost your confidence in your abilities keep exploring that observational and reworking skill you are developing.
