This was painted using egg Tempera out of a tube. It came about as a result of a term of trying unusual paints and papers with my local art club. I know it’s not the real deal when it comes to egg Tempera, but I enjoyed using it so much that I intend to have a go with pigment and egg yolk. C&C welcome

"Painting is a verb"
August 27, 2019 at 4:37 am #871444Hi Gary, thanks for your comments. The painting is intended to be a finished piece, not an under painting. It was inspired by those blue Chinese willow pattern plates.
Egg Tempera dries very very quickly, literally seconds as soon as it is applied. Although like oil paint it is not considered completely dry for many months especially if many layers are applied, this painting really only had two layers. One of the challenges I faced was the only way I can correct errors was to pick the paint off with a razor blade.
Egg Tempera is a very old form of painting and has been around in one form or another for many hundreds, if not thousands of years. Many paintings made before the invention of oil paint in around 1420 were done using Tempera, examples include Botticelli’s Birth of Venus and Leonardo da vinci’s Last Supper.
I am certainly not an expect on the subject, so if anyone knows better, your comments would be gratefully received.
Alan

Lovely monotone painting with nice sense of depth.
C&C welcome and appreciated
