Here is a small Oil version I’m working on developing/modifying the color of a 12×16 Pastel. A client has commissioned a 24×18 Oil finish. My recent practice with greens has helped a good deal in mixing.

Agreed. Around here (that being coastal California), there is a short season when everything (except chaparral) is monotonously green, then a longer season when everything is monotonously brown. Capturing a variety of color is important.
My guess is that the scene is from somewhere in the second range inland from the central coast, vicinity of Gilroy – Los Baños.

The view stopped my short in the car. The greens in Winter are pretty amazing when they’re wound up, but then quickly dry out.

I like using black + cadmium yellow and black plus yellow ochre for my greens, rarely using blue unless needing a really cool green. You mentioned mixing new greens – what are you using?

I’ve never used much, but have entirely stopped using any black for darks, now preferring mixes of color (ultra, alizarin, transparent red oxide). I do see many cooler hues in normal atmosphere and bringing ultra and cerulean into mixes it my path.
