Re: Oil pastel challenge and chat for April 2019

Thank you, Mira! See, we are of like minds. I had the same thoughts about the swirls. I wanted to connect the two image subjects somehow, so the hair kind of came to me at the very end.

Then I couldn't decide how to do it. More, less, or longer strokes - like hair? Or just more, like a thicker flow.

You can see that, in the end, I left it alone and am inviting comments. If I was better at messing around in Gimp I could give it a try without messing up the painting, but I'm not.

If I did anything, it would be to add more and make it more flowing.

Lovely painting, Terri! The swirls connect the face to the earth in a cool way!
If you want to test out ideas on the original, take a layer of cellophane, place it over the painting and add adjustments.

That's brilliant! So much easier, and faster, than struggling through any photo processing software.

Thanks for the kind words, as well as the tip, Christel!

Nice work Terri. Lovely light and coloring, and love the addition of the swirls leading to the tree. That nupastel layer is working great for you. It's interesting to see those colors before the op layers are added and in the final piece. I also like how you changed the thickness of the path/water in the final image. (I see it as a path, but that's irrelevant). Great job and love those wip's.

Well done Christel. Good focus on the dog and photographer. The detailing is excellent!

Thanks so much, Rich! I have really come around on the Nupastels - they took some getting used to for me. I have a 24-piece set, and sometimes it is limiting in precise colors, but always perfect for simple blocking.

I couldn't decide what the path/water should be - I detect guardrails in the ref, so I think it's a road. But what the heck, with this surrealism/fantasy stuff, you get to make it however it suits.

Christel - this is great work! The posture of the photographer is perfect, and your animals are always spot on. Hair texture, nose colors - wow. Nice one!

Oh, this cool reference, Christel! You've done great - I love the colors and the detailing
I also plan to do one or two for this month's challenge. Always plan to do much, but it always gets put off till the end of the month *facepalm*

WOW! Wonderful concept and detail.

Thanks for showing the steps you went through.

Swirly bits make the image so much more surreal, I think

I'm all over the place at the moment, travelling that is.

Hope I have already replied Terri, but can't see where - many thanks for your thoughts.
