GMIC Robin

Since it's raining I decided to use my break time to edit something in GIMP with the G'MIC plugin. Free software and there's so much that can be done. This is my first effort with it.

Reminds me of a velvet painting.

You can actually do quite a bit with GIMP. Just a bit of a curve to it.

Re: GMIC Robin

I think if you're already proficient with Photoshop then GIMP would be pretty easy to learn. This G'MIC plugin is amazing.

Re: GMIC Robin

Hey, that is pretty cool. It looks like an abstract night scene. Looks like one of those Black Light Posters from the 70's, not that I would know anything about them. Is this a posterize effect? I am glad that you are trying different techniques, especially with using images that you play with using RAW files. You will get better results.

You said that you looked at TOPAZ and found it to be expensive. YOU SHOULD DOWNLOAD TOPAZ STUDIO. It is free!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! and you won't be disappointed. You will get the basic version and only have a limited amount of adjustments to use but that is where I started and I was pleasantly surprised what I could do just using the basic program and all the tools that it came with.

You should look at some of the tutorials to get the idea of what the software can do. Don't spend money on the extra Plug-Ins or stand alones unless you are really into creating art work. You will get many presets with the FREE package and that alone will keep you busy for a long time. The software is NON DESTRUCTIVE (so important) and can be used as a plug in with Lightroom, Photoshop or a Stand Alone. The free package has the following adjustments:

  • Basic Adjustment which includes: Exposure, Contrast, Clarity, Shadow, Highlights, Black and White Level, Color Saturation
  • Tone Curves
  • Brightness
  • Contrast
  • Text
  • Vignette
  • Film Grain
  • Posterize
  • Dual Tone
  • Color Overlay

You can do a whole lot with those adjustments. And the presets are pretty exciting too. I did buy most of the extras but only did when they were on sale. I got a good deal on BLACK FRIDAY. They keep coming out with more software but so far nothing that I can't live without. [/list]

Just wanted to elaborate on this as it seems kind of snippy in print, sorry. Rarely do I find myself with the time to type as I'm either ignoring my job or my wife, neither is a good thing. This is my time 5:AM. I wish I could dictate what I want to say, it would be much faster. Anyway, I apologize for my short unthoughtful posts in advance.

G'MIC has a list of decorations as long as my arm and as you scroll through them, you can just pick the one you want judging by the preview. Of course there are more adjustments that can be made in each of these choices, but I didn't make any except the color of the frame. Hence no work on my part.
