A Bend in the Road

This is at the "what does it need?" stage. Oil pastels, 8x14 on rough wc paper with sanded gesso. As usual, the top scumbles (mostly blue) photograph much lighter than IRL, and the paper texture is exaggerated. Frustrating.
All crits and comments welcome. It needs fresh eyes.

Thanks for looking.

I think what this is missing is a frame! This is beautiful - I love the colors

Wonderful Wendy....no crits. Does it need a better focus?
I'm having trouble with Tom's paintings today also. Maybe my old eyes?
Your colors are gorgeous.

Re: A Bend in the Road

I really tried to think of something to suggest but this just looks great to me. I love that golden field in front of the blue distant line of trees.

I tried using oil pastels for a while. I thought that they really were the most difficult to photograph.

Re: A Bend in the Road

Beautiful painting Wendy. If I had to make a crit, for my taste (which is questionable) I find the foregound a little too hot. I would prefer more neutral earth colors for the road so the flowers sing out more. Then again, many people will like that colorful look. Or maybe it's the photo.

I looked at your gallery. Beautiful work. Very modest of you to even ask for crit. You know what your doing.

Wendy this is so pretty. I'm also looking to see if anything looks like it needs attention and I don't see anything. Lovely color and atmosphere, very peaceful.

Re: A Bend in the Road

Lovely colors & an interesting composition which invites the viewer into the scene then directs the eye to the upper section - Very Effective !

A minor suggestion would be to reduce the intensity of the yellow ochre field - not the whole field but just the upper section where it meets those distant trees. This may help with the illusion of depth - Just a thought.

Everything else - Superb - Well Done Wendy !

Michael.

Re: A Bend in the Road

CaliAnn, Derek, Gary and Caroline, thank you for those kind words!

John, point taken about the foreground "heat" . PEI is a land of saturated color and very red soil. But perhaps that shadow could be cooled somewhat, thanks. And re the comment about modesty, I hope I never stop learning( and that's what makes this forum so great)!

Gay, Donna, Lucy and Wes, your encouraging comments are much appreciated!

Michael, good suggestion, worth looking at, thank you.

Re: A Bend in the Road

Beautiful summery feel in this one.
Perhaps some foliage at the left side of the curve? My eye resists following the curve to the right due to that expansive area of road on the left. Just my small two cents.

Re: A Bend in the Road

Bizzibee, thanks for your comment!
Jon, thanks for your input! I noticed that as well (after posting) and decided that the contrast on the left horizontal edge of the lane might be the culprit so I lightened it and it helped quite a bit.Now I'll give it another look too.
