Lisa, nice sky in your painting. That tree looks lonely... but maybe that was the concept

Rich, I love how you rendered the mist in this one! When I saw this painting on your instagram, I didn't realize it was from the Feb challenge

Christel, I love that yellow sky! Lovely work throughout, especially the detail in the tree branches.

Re: February 2019 Oil Pastel Challenge and Chat!

Guys, I wanted to share my new purchase with you which I am very happy about - the small set of Holbeins!
I ordered it on ebay and received it in just a week after shipping

Here it is:

Well, actually I own only half of the set... because they are kinda pricey for me and another oil pastelist from my city and me split the set and the price.
But anyway, I am very happy to try them! ^__^

This is my color chart with the Holbeins (I only forgot to add white to the colors):

Very rich in pigment! I haven't played with them much yet but based on the very first impressions the texture kind of reminds me of the Neopastels texture... though Holbeins should be softer and different in texture.
One thing that surprised me was that one of the sticks, "Flesh", was not lightfast. I got a leaflet with all the 100 color names and lightfastness rating and... some of the common colors aren't lightfast at all. Like this "Flesh" tone (weird, why put such a stick in the small set? and why should a common color not be lightfast?) and one blue, some violets (Lavender for example). I thought such companies as Holbein and Sennelier only have non-lightfast colors which are metallic, fluorescent.

So cool Mira. I been curious about Holbeins and interested in trying them out also. The square paperless sticks interest me, but also wondering how soft they are. Or how easily they spread. Are the sticks large? Like how big next to the mungyos?

Cool, Mira! Are you going to wrap them?

I took some pictures before I cut them in halves
Here is some comparison:

The blending isn't seen well here. They are soft - at least no firmer than Neopastels. Maybe softer. (They should be, according to the reviews).
They spread very well. When blending them, I feel they blend easier than Neos. They must be somewhere in-between Sennelier and Neopastel in terms of blendability.

Maybe I haven't played with them much and that's the reason, but... for the moment I can't see big difference between them and the Neopastels. They are supposed to have a texture much different from Neopastels, but I haven't noticed it so far...

I think no, because I only got half of each stick now, so they won't last very long, I assume. But they do get super messy! It's okay that my fingers get dirty, but I am not very happy about the sticks getting all contaminated with other colors, so you have to keep cleaning them...
If I had the full sticks, I would probably wrap them.

Now I got even more interested in the Specialists. They are also square, fatter than Holbeins (and way cheaper! ), vibrant colors... though they are definitively firmer and harder. But I think I don't mind some firmness.
