Re: Joan's Sketches from 2019

Here are a few local sketches. I like train crossings but usually don't have a good area to sit and sketch them. The stone building was on the property of a golf course. The garden gate is so fun. There was a matching gate for the other side but the two were a bit too much to do.

My portrait group had Pam for a model one week recently. I got a good likeness of her. Here is my long portrait of her and a quick sketch.

My sketch group had a theme of fruit. I got to do an assortment of different kinds.

Re: Joan's Sketches from 2019

I have always thought this florist was a pretty building and when I was working I passed it every day going to work. I no longer live near that town but I had an appointment nearby. On the way home I lucked out and got a parking spot with a good view of the building. To me it has a French look to it.

The birds were at a town dock in West Islip. They were content to sit there and pose for a while until someone got out of their car on the other side with some bread and they abandoned their perches quickly. They did return and I was able to quickly sketch one that was still in the air.

Re: Joan's Sketches from 2019

Oh, so much to catch up on.

The mini portraits were a nice surprise. I may have missed lots of stuff in the past, but I honestly haven't seen that kind of output from you before. So nice to see. Lots of flowers and flower pots. Not enough flower pots in this world, I think. I adore the bleak winter scenes with the brown grass. I'm particularly fond of the one scene (post #57) where you sketch the end of the road, sort of. I find myself really quite interested in those stops, or dead ends, where human activity starts to fall away. Sometimes abrupt.

Lovely stuff.

Re: Joan's Sketches from 2019

Munin, thanks so much for your comment. I like sketching the ends of the roads here with the barrier or grasses before the view across the water.

A few weekends ago my friend, Suzala and I went to Northport which is on the north shore of Long Island. It had snowed a bit earlier in the week. Although we didn't get much snow near me Northport seemed to have quite a bit. It was a warm day so we decided to see if we could sit outside the car to sketch. We found a fairly clear area to plant our chairs right by a group of kayaks. I sketched the kayaks and then Suzala. The last sketch was done directly in ink. We only had a short time to do that one because she had to leave to do something else. We found a spot to sit on the steps of a business that was closed for the day and sketched the view. I started with the car closes to me and of course the owner drove away before I was completely done...the perils of sketching from life. lol

Re: Joan's Sketches from 2019

Our local libraries often have performances on Sundays. This was a duo who were performing Irish ballads, songs, and jigs. I sat where I had a good view and sketched for the whole hour that they sang. I showed them the sketch before I left and they were thrilled with it. Both of them took photos of it with their cell phones.

Here are a few sketches done down by the water (my favorite place). The first two are from the same location but one was facing the ocean and the other facing the bay.

Re: Joan's Sketches from 2019

I'm enjoying the "Bistro" line drawing. I find it almost impossible to wrestle with that notion. I have tried, but I always end up scribbling. The latest selection is such a gorgeous grouping for me. The subject, colours, and delivery are magical.

My evening sketch group brought fabrics to sketch one night. The patterns were too overwhelming so I did small swatches of some of them.

Re: Joan's Sketches from 2019

The first sketch is a cottage/house in Port Jefferson overlooking the water. I like sketching on this street because the houses are all up on the hill.

The birds were near my car as I sketched the ocean view at Smith Point. I figured I would catch their poses while they were nearby. The ocean view was sketched from my "mobile studio."

Re: Joan's Sketches from 2019

The NYC Urban Sketchers went to the Morgan Library and Museum recently. I was there before it opened so I went around the corner and sketched this relief that was over the doorway at the Polish Counselate.

The Morgan Library has two sections. The first is part of the original building and houses the library that housed JP Morgan's collection including three Gothenburg bibles that he owned. It was so impressive and I loved the decorative touches up by the ceiling. I sketched the room but painted it out in the lobby. Morgan's study was also beautiful and decorated in reds. I was surprised that the guards let us sit on our stools and sketch in there...even use water brushes.

Re: Joan's Sketches from 2019

I had a little time before we were leaving to go do our "show and tell" so I sat downstairs and sketched one of the other sketchers.

The NYC Saint Patrick's Day Parade was held that day. On the way home on the train I encountered a few young people who had gone into the city to see the parade. These two seemed exhausted. lol

Good idea to simplify the patterns on the fabrics. You know I enjoy the Shamrock tights peeking through the knees on the jeans
