Re: Joan's Sketches from 2019

My Wednesday night sketch group had a them of "Salt and Pepper Shakers." We had such an assortment of animal shakers to work from. I did a few but missed doing the peacocks and mermaids that were down at the other end of the table. I ran out of time to do more.

Re: Joan's Sketches from 2019

My friend and I took a ride this week to Oyster Bay. On the way I saw this cute stone building out of the corner of my eye, so I turned the car around so we could sketch there. I've tried to find out what the building originally was but have had no luck. Right now it is sitting fenced off in front of a parking garage for a business.

When we finished the stone house we headed into town to sketch this former train station. It was built when Teddy Roosevelt had his summer home in Oyster Bay. This allowed visitors and his family easier access to their home by the water. Now the station is being renovated and turned into a railroad museum.

Re: Joan's Sketches from 2019

On Saturday the NYC Urban Sketchers went to Chelsea Market in downtown Manhattan. The converted building was once the home of the Nabisco factory and was where the Oreo cookie was invented. Now it is full of places to eat and small shops...and lots of people.

When I first got there I sketched outside the Chelsea Market Basket. I liked the colorful straw baskets hanging outside. Once it started getting crowded I tucked myself against a wall behind a tall table that was the perfect height for sketching the view through the hallway with some people walking along. My last sketch of the day was done of this beautiful cut flower shop. It was hard sketching there because by this time there were crowds of people walking around, mostly in front of me. lol

Re: Joan's Sketches from 2019

On Sunday I had post holiday luncheon with one of my art groups. At the end of the party at about 4:30 I headed down by the water to see if I could catch the sunset near the docks. It wasn't very colorful but I liked the subdued colors.

Re: Joan's Sketches from 2019

Thanks, EP!

Here are two that are marine related. I like sketching boats but the gulls really attracted me. I limited the number I sketched since there were about 20 of them there. I knew they would take off before I was finished. lol

Our portrait group met with Sally as our model. I did a regular portrait of her as well as a 10 minute one as practice for the Portrait Party.

Re: Joan's Sketches from 2019

We had several days of brutal cold where it was even too cold to sit in my "mobile studio." I had to go out for an appointment so I figured while I was out I would stop and see if I could get parking in front of a nearby Starbucks. It was nice and toasty inside.

The next day I went out to sketch the frozen jetty from my car. I brought along a wool blanket to keep my legs warm in the car.

Re: Joan's Sketches from 2019

The NYC Urban Sketchers organized our annual Portrait Party last Saturday. It has become so popular that this year we had to find a new venue to hold it in because we had around 100 people take part. It was held in the cafeteria of the High School of Art and Design in Manhattan. We were divided up into 8 groups of 12 people each. We all worked on the same Strathmore watercolor paper. You could sketch in the medium of your choice but your sketch had to be large and strong enough to be seen from 20 feet away. The sketch of each person in your group was created in 10 minutes and each member of the team posed. At the end of the day the portraits for each group were all laid out in a grid. Looking across the grid in each row were all the portraits done by one sketcher. Looking down the grid was every portrait done of that person. I'm showing you just one of the 8 completed grids. I was the last one in my group to pose so my sketches of everyone make up the last row. My sketches were done either with a brown Tombow marker or a black Sharpie with watercolor added.
