Re: Oil pastel challenge and chat for October

Thanks for the WIP shots, Christel!

I think I lack the ability to pre-visualize how to go about a complicated image. I keep hoping something will take hold by looking at how others build out their paintings.

Thanks for these WIP's, Christel! Looks great so far, and a very challenging image.

Re: Oil pastel challenge and chat for October

Thanks Lamar and Terri!
I darkened the sky a bit more with black Dermatograph marker and mauve op.
I decided to paint the log the normal way, blending the Treeline brown op with a little black marker. I then added more black, light brown , light orange and salmon pink and white

Finished! - I think!

The colors are nearly representative
I hope you enjoy looking at it as much as I enjoyed painting it

Terrific ending to this image - I love those purply-browns, and the detail in the log is excellent. Turned out great - thanks again for the WIP's, I think most of us really love seeing how others build their paintings.

Beautiful work Christel and Terri! I really love your renditions. Difficult scenes, and I like your versions better than the ref photos.

I've been on vacation and getting over a cold. But I think I can at least get one in. I have a image in my mind, so hopefully I can get that out before end of October!

Thanks Rich! A cold now already before the winter even starts isn't nice at all. Hoe you get well soon.

Thank you, Rich! I had a lot of fun with it. Glad you're on the mend, and hope you can get back to painting soon!

Re: Oil pastel challenge and chat for October

I'm posting an official and humble apology for not being able to join in. I really wanted to, had ideas and everything, just really struggled with time this month.

You've done fantastic work this month, guys, well done!

Time pressure happens to us all, Sarah! It got very quiet around here, so I think everyone's been busy. No worries.

I had fun with mine as it was so outside my wheelhouse, so I appreciated the push. Thanks for hosting, Christel!

Re: Oil pastel challenge and chat for October

I really wanted to post one last month, Oct. But it was just a time, and skill, thing. Started a couple but didn't have time to get the detail done.

Re: Oil pastel challenge and chat for October

This was a great theme for a monthly challenge. I'm just in middle of an Autumn series I'm working on and not enough time. But I do have an image and idea in my head I want to do, that I was going to submit for this challenge.

Thanks Christel for always hosting, providing photos and keeping everything going!

I do have a couple more WIP pics:

I did three separate turpenoid washes in this piece, mainly to save time covering/blending larger areas on this 12x16" paper: sky, the book, and the right side forest. It really helped, and I knew the Arches oil paper could handle it.

Final photo:

Not wild about the birds. I may scrape off the ones on the left and just keep the others.

Anyway, thanks again Christel for posting such a unique challenge! This was wayyy outside my comfort zone, and I ended up having fun with it.

It looks phenominal
