Wonderful Christel. I'm still deciding. Have several favourites, but can't see a way to do them yet.

Amazing work, Christel! The blurred background is spot on. You make it look so easy! Fantastic work.

Thanks Jennie and Terri!
Jennie - would it help to post a wip for you to follow? If you'd like that then give me some options and I'll see what I can do.

Re: Oil pastel challenge and chat for October

Okay, I have selected the "fantasy book" to try. Like Jennie, I did some hand-wringing over how to attack this thing at first, but I ended up just going about it the usual way: sketch it out to see if it's doable for my skill sets, and then slowly work out a path.

I'm a long ways from being finished, as you can see, but here are my WIP's so far:

the sketch, using soft pastels (ease of erasing!):

Starting from the back, an underpainting with Mungyo OP's lightly rolled in, which was followed by a turpenoid wash:

Starting in on the sky, pretty much all Mungyos at this stage:

A long way to go, but I'm slowly feeling my way. Wish me luck!

Re: Oil pastel challenge and chat for October

Finished! This one ended up being one of the more fun things I've tackled. A strange composite photo, multiple light directions, warm colors - I got drawn in.

I do have a couple more WIP pics:

I did three separate turpenoid washes in this piece, mainly to save time covering/blending larger areas on this 12x16" paper: sky, the book, and the right side forest. It really helped, and I knew the Arches oil paper could handle it.

Final photo:

Not wild about the birds. I may scrape off the ones on the left and just keep the others.

Anyway, thanks again Christel for posting such a unique challenge! This was wayyy outside my comfort zone, and I ended up having fun with it.
