Christel,
Waves are incredible. So are the textures of the rocks. Very neat work.

My take on Rossbeigh beach dominica

using CrayPas Expressionists OPs on 7x10 inches watercolor paper.

Dear Christel, Terri <Isobel,
I have enjoyed the pictures and what you all have done with them. I am just getting back to painting again and tried the horses. I will try to send it to this fine learning experience. Maela 49 Eleanore

Dear Raj,
Your painting is incredible. You made it so realistic and used the watdercolor paper and craypas. I must say that I like the oil sticks better because if you need to correct you can cover up the mistakes. I find this difficult using oil pastels though their size make it easier to draw with them . Re: Oil pastel chat and challenge thread for May 2018

Christel- Thank you for your comment. I agree it's hard to paint yellow over blue, it turns out green as you can see at some areas of the sky. The trick is I added more layers of light yellow on top using a plastic palette knife. I used the same technique to paint the yellow reflection of the sun over the blue ocean.

Eleanore- I appreciate your feedback. I have been using OPs for about an year and I feel pretty comfortable now working with them. I have never used oil medium, but have heard that it is much more forgiving than OPs. When I need to do corrections with my OP work, I do scrapping, use fixative sprays to add more roughness that allows more OP layers, and sometimes apply thick layers of OPs with the help of a palette knife to cover up my mistakes.

Eleanore,
I like your horses painting. I would suggest to add more details or textures to the foreground grass. You can also consider using a colored pencil to sharpen some of the edges in your painting.

This is beautiful, Raj! I like seeing your use of the Cray Pas Expressionist op's from start to end. I always liked mine for that first coat, but have neglected them lately - I've forgotten what nice bright colors they offer. You did well with your blending, too. Great job!

Hi Eleanore, nice to see you! You did a great job drawing these horses - very nice! I agree that you could "sharpen" your edges in a few areas just by using the pointed end of a scraping tool. But I like soft edges, too, I think they help show the movement of the horses.

Happy to see you posting again - keep it up!

Re: Oil pastel chat and challenge thread for May 2018

Thank you everyone for your valid comments. I used the wrong paper and did too much erasing which I tried to eliminate unsuccessfully. The experts on your website certainly makes me ambitious. It I has been a long time to allow me the chance to try your wonderful pictures. Eleanore

Bonita Lake on Watercolor paper. It's a smaller size painting (approx. 6x9 inches) using Craypas Expressionists OPs. I also used white sennelier OP for highlighting some areas.

I simplified the composition a little bit compared to the reference image.
