I really enjoyed doing this digital painting for two reasons, one I love the character and two he is a colourful person. I did this painting in Adobe Photoshop with minimal brush options. I’ve given below the tools I used and the steps how I progressed…
Tools:
For bold and sharp lines I used the ‘Hard Round Brush’.
For filling colours and rendering large areas I used ‘Soft Round Brush’
The third tool I used is the ‘Smudge Tool’. I used this to blend two colours smoothly.
Step 1
The outline is traced from the original photograph. I’ve used ‘Hard Round Brush’ for this. I named this layer as ‘Outline’. The Outline layer is kept always as top layer. I’ve chose ‘Multiply’ option in the Drop down list from the Layers Window. This will help you to keep the outline visible even if you fill colours.
Step 2
The mid tone colours are filled. I used the Pen tool to draw the basic shapes and filled the colours.
Step 3
I worked on the hair part using the ‘Hard Round Brush’. I chose Crimson Red and rendered the hair part with nice curvy lines. The same way I rendered the hat ribbon part.
Step 4
In this step I turned off the Outline layer and worked more precisely on the hair part. I’ve used bright yellow ochre for the hair highlights.
I then started filling up vibrant colours for the neck bow. To give silky shining to the bow tie I’ve used more highlights.Step 5
This is almost the final stage. All the colours are filled properly. I used ‘Soft Round Brush’ for the coat, hand and tea cup portions. I then used Smudge tool to blend the colours smoothly. The background is filled with a vibrant green colour as in the original photograph.
Step 6
Finally I worked on details like eye lashes, hat motifs, hand scarf etc. Here where the highlights and shadows are added to the overall painting to give the completeness. I have made the background little grainy to give a texture feeling. For this effect I used ‘Noise’ option from the ‘Filter’ menu.
