What defines a Plein Air painting?

I've been Plein Air painting for just a short time now and have been practicing with a few artists who have been plain air painting for quite some time now. When I originally started plein air, I understood it to be a painting which is completed outdoors, onsite. However, the artists I paint with don't seem to feel that way. Two of them begin their paintings outdoors and then finish them up in studio, sometimes they do over half of it in studio. The other finishes his paintings outside but may redo a plein air on a larger canvas and with more detail. As far as I'm concerned, they are free to do whatever they want with their paintings but this has led me to question, just what is considered a truly plein air painting?

There are no rules. As long as -some- of the painting was done outdoors, you can get away with calling it a plein air painting, I suppose.

That being said, some plein air events do have very specific rules. Some artists, as well as some buyers, have their own set of parameters that they follow.

The Plein Air Movement has become all about commercialism, their attitude has done so much harm I no longer call my paintings done outside plein air but refer to them as awayday paintings eg done away from the studio.
Get on with your painting in whichever way you want to.

Dave.

Re: What defines a Plein Air painting?

I've looked and looked and there doesn't seem to be firm definition of en plein air - outdoor - painting. The consensus however, seems to be any painting done outdoors, which leaves a lot to interpretation.

If, as pointed out, one paints for a group with their own definition then the painting method should fall within that group's rules/guidelines.

A painter might reap great rewards in education and enjoyment by getting out there and doing it. I keep putting it off because I'm scared someone might see me.

If you do it naked, you'd be amazed how much less self-conscious you'll feel about your painting.

Even more open to opinion, if you read Michael Chesley Johnson's "Backpacker Painting: Outdoors with Pastel & Oil." Early in the book, he describes some discussions about the definition of plein air painting he has been part of. Opinions varied widely, but he ends the section by saying that a painting "needs to be created in the spirit of plein air painting to be called plein air." I was starting to feel dizzy.

If I were to paint en plein air en plein skin, I do believe I'd worry not a whit about someone looking over my shoulder. Wouldn't be a person within eyesight of me.

When you paint 'from life' whether it be still life, figures, portraits, or landscapes etc. I think the paintings just end up with a quality that you just can't get any other way. . . . . . to me that's what is 'plein air' about them.

You might have to do your next plein air painting from a prison cell.
