The Gnats Won Today!

We tried painting in the desert today near the Northernmost border of Arizona. There was a nice breeze, around 90 degrees, blue sky, lovely clouds, a perfect day to paint. Unfortunately, once the breeze stopped, the gnats were so bad that we had to pack up and head home. Even drenched with DEET they would not leave us alone. I think there were at any given moment well over 50 gnats within a 15 inch circle right in front of my face. The high pitched whine of their wings within fractions of an inch of both ears was overpowering. They regularly tried to land on the surface of my eyeballs. Not a single bite thanks to the DEET which is good since the bites from these critters raises welts on me that burn and itch for about a week and a half.

All I was able to do before I gave in was my preliminary pencil sketch and blocking in the sky. Tomorrow we are without question heading up past the 10,000 foot elevation to paint. Gnats? YOU WIN!

I had something like that happen to me here in the east. Painting on a clear day nice breeze. Then it stops, Gnat's or some kind of little bug come around. I had some Deet on , they did not bother me but made trails all trough the painting. They must have liked the medium or the paint.

Yeah, that's discouraging. Would a portable, battery-powered fan have helped? (This thread prompted me to order one from Amazon, so maybe I'll offer an answer to my own question in a few days.)

Re: The Gnats Won Today!

I've had them attracted to a plein-air alkyd-oil painting. When I did a sky with pale magenta about three dozen got stuck on that sky but ignored other colors. The next day I was able to brush them off but each had left a small discolored spot, (nat poop?). I had to paint over the sky. But on me... not so much.

Makes me wonder if a sacrifice magenta wet panel would distract and trap the buggers.

Have fun, dave

Re: The Gnats Won Today!

The same thing happened to me in Southern Arizona. I set up on a beautiful day at the entrance to Madera Canyon. I started a sketch, then noticed hordes of the same critters starting to surround me. Within minutes I was inundated with them, crawling over my palette and easel. Packed up and headed back to Tucson and King's Canyon (near the Arizona Sonora Desert Museum) for a much more pleasant day.

Sometimes the desert is nice, sometimes not.

As a side note, remember that DEET is not kind to plastics.

That is true. Apparently some people are very allergic to DEET. I heard a story about some tourists dousing themselves with 100% DEET then climbing aboard the bus going into Denali N.P. - At least one person not in the DEET saturated group got quite ill. The story told of the bus driver intentionally leaving them at the next stop so they would go curse another bus.

We used to live in a high desert town that was plagued every summer with biting gnats. If there was a Juniper tree near, there would be gnats. They would draw blood and the only thing that seemed to keep them away was Avon Skin So Soft. I would rub it all over any exposed skin and work it into my scalp before daring to work outside during the gnat season.

Re: The Gnats Won Today!

When I was a kid we used to light something called a punk. You could stick it in the ground and it burned slowly. Bugs did not like the smoke.....but not too unpleasant for humans. It looked like cat tails.
How about citronella? a bowl of vinegar and some dish detergent set a wee bit away from you attracts them and once in the bowl, the detergent traps them.

Re: The Gnats Won Today!

You could light incense sticks and stick them all around your easel. Maybe that would keep the gnats away? But it might attract hippies.

Re: The Gnats Won Today!

Thanks for the tips!

I do remember that song. I wanted to be hippy and go to San Francisco with my sister in a lime green VW Microbus, but my mom wouldn't let me. I was about 10 at the time. Probably a good thing that she didn't.
