Two old timers near my home. Tired and sad, but they have each other.
14×17 atelier acrylics on board.

They make me think of the pit ponies which were used in the mines here. Some were stabled in the mines and only came up for the holidays, hauling coal day after day. The last one, called Tony (the pony!) died in 2011 at a cat and dog shelter near me.

June 12, 2019 at 4:09 pm #840833The horses are great and I really appreciate how skillfully you painted the background to bring the horses forward. I find encouragement in your use of acrylics for such a subtle work. Gary

June 12, 2019 at 7:16 pm #840839Magnificent work Derek! The fence in shade and in light surrounded by these realistic horses is indeed something to behold…..

June 12, 2019 at 9:06 pm #840837Not really a landscape, but the stark shadows on the horse are very creative.
Everything else being equal, I would rather be in the painting zone.

Wonderful values work on the horses as well to give them a very realistic appearance.
Love it.

DaveJune 13, 2019 at 6:57 am #840836Hi Derek – Nice to see your work again – This one displays all the qualities typical of your style – Superbly rendered detail as usual & I particularly those horse’s heads & their expressions which are particularly well rendered indeed – I hope they got a carrot or 2 for posing as your subjects – Lovely Work !
