WDE Nov 29 - Cijo tree

My usual medium is transparent watercolor. I answered the
challenge by using gouache for the first time. My set did
not have any white, so that was a challenge in itself. Whitegouache is on order.

It was 11:30 last night when I took my last 15 minutes of sleepy

wakefulness to do this. I'm usually in bed by 10, so this added

to the challenge. I could not resist trying out a new medium,

no matter the hour.

5x7 M. Graham gouache on mixed media paper.

Background is acrylic.

I don't know why those spaces appeared between the lines.

I guess WC decided you needed double spacing!! ... probably those pesky gremlins in the basement!
However, this is a lovely vignette of the tree, you caught the character of it well.

Re: WDE Nov 29 - Cijo tree

this almost convinces me the woolly sweater is unnecessary, the hot sun is on that green and the shadow is cool only in comparison. the brown branches feel like a shadow of the crown, and add dimension. you've captured a strong mood very economically.

It's great that you decided to do the challenge! I love what you've done with the Cuji tree, capturing all those sensuous curves so well! The background color is really well chosen for the whole vignette to stand out brilliantly. Thanks for participating this week and bringing us this exciting piece.

The opaque gouache pops nicely on the hot transparent background!

Yes, there is a Chinese look to the calligraphy. A good result from your experiment.

I agree with the comments about Chinese painting or calligraphy...beautiful simplification of the subject and the color is riveting!
