Deer skull, WIP

I am still working and re-learning oil painting. I am doing still life to learn the nuances of the material and tools.
I am working on this painting using a hard board 12x16 and Rembrandt oils. The reference photo was taken using a black sheet and a blue light at the top and an orange light on the bottom as complementary colors. A friend of mine is a hunter who provided the deer skull. I am finishing this work at the background and the small details as well. C&C are welcomed.

I like it!

My first impression with the two contrasting colors is that the subject is perched atop a pole above a fire while cool moonlight washed down from the sky above.

The coloring is spot on. Well done.

With a few embers floating up here and there, you'd totally nail the campfire effect.

Re: Deer skull, WIP

I love the complementary colors you used to make this pop off the darker background color.

Very interesting. The lighting is great, well painted, it adds an interest and liveliness to what might have been boring. I do think you need to make a bit more change in the black background - warmer on the bottom. Not a lot more than you already have, but a bit because right now it reads as almost a solid flat black.

Thank you Allison,
Yes, I did that. I added dark blue values to the top and warm values to the bottom. In reality, the background is rather thin and mysterious, and not solid as it shown.
