Re: Sketch thread for oil pastels 2019

Oops! Don't know how I managed to misplace this. My excuse clumsy hands!

Am exploring florals .. never been tempted with them before.

First effort, minimal editing.

Hi Mira, Cray-pas Specialist were my first and I agree about the colour range. Even though I do create sharpe edges, I really enjoy the cray-pas shape.

Re: Sketch thread for oil pastels 2019

image two, ... a bit dark, A5 sketchbook, created with cheap OPs.

I managed two posts in one day, so I'm not tempting fate by trying to flip it.

Re: Sketch thread for oil pastels 2019

Hi Jennie, your flowers almost look like abstract painting - interesting! But the image quality seems to be not very good, it's blurry...

Interesting take on the apple from the challenge, good colors

Do you still use Cray-Pas Specialists? How do you feel about them being a bit on the transparent side?

Love your floral sketch, Jennie! What a pretty palette you used. I agree with Mira that this has an abstract feel to it. Nice!

I'm not seeing the apple in the second image you posted - looks like a composite photo? Hmm...

It is blurry Mira, sometimes my hand wobble a bit! Didn't realise it was quite so bad.

I do the Cray-pas, the transparency catches me out sometimes, I tend to either work those area with several 'hard' layers or use some mungyos to see what I get.

I experiment a lot, and am still developing techniques to achieve the results I think work.

HA HA HA Just when I thought I'd had an image posting win.

This is not an OP work. It is one of my surreal digital images. I added it below another image, that was an OP piece.

Honestly ... when I checked the preview it all looked fine.

Yes, it is the second image I added to my post. It's one of my digital pieces.

Have no idea where the first went. I was there when I click Submit.

Will be very glad when my first choice is once again my laptop!

Going back to one pick a day until then

Thanks Christel. I think not using OPs for a while has made me a bit more adventurous

Hi Mira, I'll check out the IG challenge. It's always nice to see what's happening in other parts of the world. I'm in Queensland Australia.

I really think your branches tell a great story. I generally struggle to get them looking less like sticks and more like branches.

I figured it was your files messing with you again! I did see the apple in the Challenge thread, just not here.

I like your digital work! Outside of my area of expertise, but I sure do appreciate those who can do it.

Cool! you'll need to search for #oilpastel_april, though some people forget to use the English hashtag so you can try the Russian one, #апрель_масляная_пастель - you'll see more works.
Oh, it's funny - we have one Australian woman who is participating in this oil pastel challenge even if she doesn't speak a word of Russian

Thank you very much! I was drawing this sketch from my photo. I was passing by this scene one day and couldn't help taking a pic - exactly because it looked like something to me. Glad you liked it!

Re: Sketch thread for oil pastels 2019

This is a new sketch I did with Sennelier OPs (I bought 6 bright colors for a while ago and finally could use this brand in an independant painting!).
It is a recreation of a Youtube tutorial by Color by Feliks. The guy paints with acrylics but I found this work to be a perfect match for the Sennelier colors I got while being a beautiful work too

Pale yellow Canson Mi-Teints pastel paper, size 18 x 20 cm (about 7 x 8 in).

I couldn't paint the waves with just white (way to bright), and I don't have any light muted Senns. So I grabbed white and silver grey Mungyo sticks and applied them lightly over the hardened coat of Sennelier. This coat had been sitting for at least 2 weeks. The background looked like that at this point (before I resumed working on it 2 weeks later):

It was the first time I did some real stuff with these OPs (before I only had some flesh colors, a white and an Ash Blue. Oh, and a Payne's grey). I have to say Senneliers are a class of their own... they are SO different from ALL other brands. I understand now why Rich says they are like painting in oil paint in the hardened form they give a sense of exquisite pleasure... too bad they are that pricey - I definitely can't afford using them often! But oh well... I am glad I have tried them for real

This is my palette:

Oh, I also used two sticks of Mungyo water-soluble OPs: black for the branches and a bit of warm red for the cherry blossoms. The thing is, my Senn red is very dark and cold. So mixing it with yellow and other light colors would only give me autumn-like orange color. I tried to add more pink by this watersoluble Mungyo.
The reason I used these Mungyos is that they are really extremely soft. I would say, close to Senns! Obvisouly when I tried drawing the branches I needed a sharpened stick, but a Specialist stick would scrape the fresh layer of the Senns (which was the waves). So I tried these extra soft Mungyos - and it worked!

Mungyo also produces watersoluble "Watercolor Crayons" (in a blue box) which are firm as I was told. The name also suggests they gotta be firm like crayons I got a tips to buy these ones, in the red-and-yellow box. The full set is only 24 pcs as I have seen on the internet.

Re: Sketch thread for oil pastels 2019

Wow! very nice sketch Mira!
Though I would call it a painting

I wonder if the mungyo aquarelle oil pastel are much different than the portfolio oil pastels as robert sloans oil pastel review site does compare the portfolio to the sennelier in terms of softness..

have fun with your new pastels Mira
