WIP - Last Night

9 x 12 in oils on canvas board ... a scarf, black suede high heels and pearls. I've got about two hours into the piece so far ...

Critiques welcomed!

Re: WIP - Last Night

I love it! This is a great grouping of related elements. I love it when there is a theme of some sort to a still life; I think that helps the painting to tell a story. This is coming together beautifully. It looks almost done. The pearls against the darker objects draw the eye very well.

Re: WIP - Last Night

Thanks, Jamie ... Although I wasn't thinking of a story (was trying to get a crack at some different textires), I love the idea that there IS one!

It's finished now ... Maybe it's a bit muddled (again ). Was also fiddling around with a warmer background but wasn't as successful as hoped. And, there is something I don't like at all about the cast shadow on the wall from the shoe. Photo's not so good, either -- taken at night.

I like the pearls, though.

Anyone else? Thanks in advance for your comments ...

Re: WIP - Last Night

wow....I was thinking, if painting women's shoes became a sudden in thing to do, just think how many of us artists would have near endless subjects, compositions and riches!!! Then again...my wife might start thinking she could go on a spree with the excuse that I could always paint them. Hhmm...ooo...bad idea....bad idea

I think the work is a good one compositionally...it has good variation, good neutral space for the eyes.

I think where it may suffer a little is the too similar range of values.

If this was converted to a black and white rendition...there would not be much variation there. IN fact, maybe I'll try it and upload for you to see...

(back shortly)

Re: WIP - Last Night

here is your painting converted to grayscale....

as I suspected, IMO anyway the values don't work with enough variation to make a dimensional pop..

Here I tweaked a bit...to give an idea anyway how this could be beefed up- lightened values of cloth in the light, and darkened parts of the shoe. Also lightened up highlights on the shoe.

Re: WIP - Last Night

I've seen lots of painting by women of shoes Larry! It's a regular theme - comes right after the chocolate!

I go with Larry's comment - it needs something to provide a better range of values so that you can see enough form (no need to see it all - some nice lost edges are a nice thing to have in a painting).

Maybe try tweaking the lighting?

I love the composition and the shoes. The shine on the shoes is so true to life. Pearls are excellent. You managed to push that scarf back with the shadows. I like it!

Re: WIP - Last Night

Wow, Larry ... thanks for taking the time to show me what could be improved. So, I'll recast this one as a WIP and post the results when I implement some of your very clear suggestions.

Katherine ... I'm grateful for your pitching in, too. Thanks!

Brian ... Once again, I appreciate your complements!

Re: WIP - Last Night

I love this Chou....
Last summer I did two shoe paintings, thought of making them into a series, but haven't done the third yet ( although it's still on my mind ). I think shoes are like portraits in a way. They can really show personality
I look forward to seeing the revised painting.
