Re: Urban Sketches

I guess this should go here as it was done on a meet upwith the local USK group.

Bic ballpoint on CP watercolour paper. A5 ish

I was disappointed that nobody came and counted to make sure I had the right number of bricks.

I had no idea there were any rules or manifestos or such things. I just thought it was a bunch of folks who decided it would be fun to just go sketch things from their normal life and hang out with like-minded people. I don't think people have to join up with the people who like rules and things like that. I just like doing it, with or without anyone doing it with me. So I'm one of the Lawless Bunch---I'm sure there are tons of people like me who just prefer to stay away from the "must's" and "have to's" and "give me money's". (I mean, you can give me money----don't get me wrong---but that isn't my plan or a requirement.) I don't understand why anyone would need to make it all business. For me, it's fun and interesting and it's within my budget.

Re: Urban Sketches

Shoot, I went to the doctor Friday but didn't think to take any sketch materials. It was just as well, though, because they called me back to see the doctor before I even got a chance to sit down so I didn't have time to sketch anything.

I did catch a little anecdote I can share though. There was a guy in Olympia who wanted to buy some meth. He didn't have any money so he stole someone's bank card that got him quite a bit of money. He'd heard the meth up here in Tacoma was better meth, so he was on his way to Tacoma with his stolen money when his car broke down. Nearby, he found a big truck with the keys in it so he "borrowed" it. Getting up near Tacoma, when he needed to use the brakes, he found out the truck didn't have any. Needing to stop somehow, he saw some fences that looked like they could probably stop the truck. He went jouncing and bouncing along the fence till he finally stopped. As he looked around, he saw there were people who were parachuting, landing around him. He took off running across what looked like a parking lot to him. He narrowly missed being hit by a fighter jet that had taxi'd out to take off because it wasn't a parking lot after all---it was the runway at the Air Force Base. The parachutists were in training and so are the pilots.

So----the MP's at the base nabbed him and he never got his meth. The lady got her money and her card back and I got a good chuckle out of the story. I hope that was okay to post here.

This may belong in the Daily Wash. If so, please let me know and I can cut and paste it into there and this can be removed.

They are the loosest "rules"'you could think of, basically you can use ant medium, sketch what you like. It is a "club" for like minded artists.

Re: Urban Sketches

I'm going to try to take a picture of my first plen aire I did when I first wanted to do urban sketching. I'll try to get a picture of it uploaded sometime tomorrow. I'm not terribly good at sketching but I'll put it up anyway. It's my first watercolor as well as my first urban sketch.

Re: Urban Sketches

Your attachment should show immediately. Best to use the mountain uploader when you see the image code inserted into your post and the picture can be seen when people reply to your post.

Thanks Doug. I'll post it again. How do I find the mountain uploader? I used the little picture image to upload.

Re: Urban Sketches

This is my first attempt of a sketch with watercolour that I've done in over four years - and I was a beginner then! It took me two days to do it so if I want to be an Urban sketcher I better get a move on!

I use Windsor and Newton professional watercolour pans and Stillman and Birn Alpha paper. The buildings were faintly sketched in with pencil and then gone over in fountain pen. One pen I used was refilled recently (Noodlers black) but I see that there was still some purple ink left over from the previous cartridge. I need to flush it. The picture is done from a photo.

The paving stones are actually a mixture of pastel colours - blue, pink, yellow and gray - but since I didn't know how to do that I opted for a wash of the pastel colours. That didn't quite work because the buildings looked as if they were floating on a cloud and so I tried adding shadows by the buildings.

It looks as if it's raining on the paving stones but it isn't. That's the paper buckling!

I had so many problems I'm not sure where to begin to ask questions. I obviously don't know how to do leaves, trees, flagstones and shadows!

All comments and suggestions are welcomed. 🙂

The photo is one I found on line. I would post it but I'm not sure if there's any copyright issue involved.

The attachment appeared upside down. I rotated it for you and uploaded it using image insert instead of Manage attachments.
