Wow Joan that's wonderful work! Your sketches make me feel like I am there. You have such nice and clean line work. And some really cool signs and slogans in there.

An impressive start to the year Joan. I like your buildings and your people sketches are wonderful - you've really captured the busy atmosphere.

Re: Joan's 2018 Sketches

Thanks Otherworlder and Sonia. I was so glad I actually got to sketch at the march this year.

Locally I ride around until a building or house inspires me like this one.

Re: Joan's 2018 Sketches

I am still trying to attend my art group's portrait sessions. One week Sam posed for us and last week Pam posed. I did 2 versions of Pam...a long portrait and then a quick 10 minute one. I'll explain more about that in the next post.

Re: Joan's 2018 Sketches

For the past few years the NYC Urban Sketchers have had a portrait party. You are divided into groups and each sketcher poses for 10 minutes while everyone in their group sketches them. Yes, the sketch has to be done in only 10 minutes. This year will be the first time I'm participating.

Everyone sketches on 9 x 12 wc paper and the sketches have to be done in a medium that can be seen clearly from a distance. At the end of the day all the portrait sketches are arranged in a grid.

Several members of the group that have been doing this every year advised the first timers to develop a strategy and practice so they are ready to have a sketch done in the time frame. I've been practicing on a pad of sketch paper that is about 8 x 10 and found a method that seems to work for me. These practice portraits were done from photos I downloaded from my photo library and are all people I know. I set a timer on my iPad and sketch first using a water-soluble graphite stick to get the basics down for the face. Then I go over it and make corrections if necessary with a brown Tombow marker (which bleeds a little when I add water) and then I add watercolor. Of course I'm working like a maniac. lol But I've been finishing in the time allowed and usually there is some resemblance to the person. Here are a group of them that I've done so far.

Re: Joan's 2018 Sketches

I move from one odd subject to another. I had to sketch a dessert for the scavenger hunt one week and did a sketch of the strudel I brought home from a restaurant that we went to. I have to say the sketch was better than the strudel tasted. lol The second sketch page was done with my Wednesday sketch group. During the winter we meet at the library in the evening and usually have a theme and this particular week it was hats. We all bring along something that fits the theme.

Re: Joan's 2018 Sketches

My friend and I went to the Cradle of Aviation Museum in Garden City. There were displays of all kinds of thing that had to do with flight from a hot air balloon display, to a WWII plane that was designed here on Long Island, to a lunar module that was also designed here.

Lovely work! The hats and the strudel are my favorite—so playful!

Re: Joan's 2018 Sketches

For the month of February I was involved in a "30 Paintings in 30 Days" Challenge. I decided to so fairly small paintings, mostly around 5 x 7 but in gouache. It is a medium I always wanted to try to learn, but it was hard to pick them up rather than my usual watercolors. My challenge was to do one painting in gouache each day. If I did additional paintings they could be in other mediums, and I pretty much stuck to it. Here are the first 3 paintings. I used a toned sketchbook for the snow scenes and the white gouache made them work well.

Here are the next few in my gouache challenge. I found the gouache worked really well for skin tones. Jeff posed for us and I did a gouache of him as well as a quick sketch.
