What looks good in a small black frame?

Hi fellow creatives! I have a dozen small black frames (the painting inside would be 10x15cm). I want to paint some paintings that would look .. outstanding in those frames. Everything inside them looks confined not framed. Or it just looks .. okay.
Any ideas?

... anything if it's painted reasonably well ... a series of fruit perhaps, or flowers, or landscapes/seascapes/skyscapes ... still lifes ... portraits (people or critters)

i googled 4x6 inch paintings and got a whole lot of anything/everything that would work with small enough brushes

Re: What looks good in a small black frame?

small simple wide frames were traditionally used to frame plein air paintings. In fact that style of frame is often called a "plein air" frame. The reality is plein air painters today use all sorts of frames, and that type is arguably out of fashion with them.

But I think landscapes look good in them. Or anything that has a good amount of negative space. Pencil sketches, etc.

Re: What looks good in a small black frame?

Hi La, thanks so much for taking the time to reply.
My problem is not the size; in fact I'm now working on woodslices with 1 to 2 inch diameter. The problem is that most paintings, once framed look very closed off somehow. Probably because the edge of the frame is relatively thick.
I think a floral or fruit series might work.. with a white background maybe.

Some paintings done in those frames.

Interesting. I didn't know that! Yup I agree, something with lots of negative space would work.

Re: What looks good in a small black frame?

Something that has a little black in it, the frame and painting would look more integrated and less confined

"Plein air frames" are floating, the image is mounted from the front.
Nothing to do with its size or simplicity.

Re: What looks good in a small black frame?

Have you thought about using them like a row or column of panels?

I saw a Gerhard (not Bernard LOL) Richter exhibition and was amazed how small images were displayed. I'll check my images for one that might work here and post if I find it.

I don't think so. Floating frames are floating frames used for all manner of paintings and NOT particlary associated with Plein Air.

Small wide boarder wood frames on the other hand WERE traditionally used by plein air painters and small wide boarder frames are often called plein air frames because of it.

Here is a partial list of retailers that refer to small wide boarder wood frames as Plein Aire frames

Re: What looks good in a small black frame?

Try putting a thin mat in a lighter transition color like beige or gray, or an eyecatching color like gold. If you want to modify your painting style as well, I would go for bold color and even more simplicity. Something like this: https://tonyallainfineart.com/collections/115508

Re: What looks good in a small black frame?

Those kind of frames are usually made for photos.

If I'm framing something that needs to be behind glass I'll mat it and it can go in a frame with a narrower moulding. The mat provides a transition between the frame and the subject. For small paintings that don't need glass I like to find a frame with a linen liner or a moulding at least 2 1/2 to 3 inches wide. A wider frame sets off the painting and draws the eye inward.

eta: Looking at them again, a still life with a dark or black background might work, particularly if you paint a series of related objects. Otherwise, there are a lot of tutorials online showing different ways to embellish a plain frame. It just depends on how much work you want to put into it.

Re: What looks good in a small black frame?

I've worked as a professional framer for the past twenty years.

I have dozens of frames in my studio, many of them small (4 x 4, 5 x 5, 6 x 9, etc.) and I often make small paintings to go with particular frames.

I can look at a frame, and "see" the painting that would "work" in that frame.

This only "works" with my stuff; can't help you with yours.

Truly sorry.

Re: What looks good in a small black frame?

I think anything put in those frames would look best matted. Less "closed off" looking. But then they would have to be quite small paintings... I also like the idea to try a darker colored/bolder subject so the black doesn't stand out so much. Maybe a close-up painting of something.
