Re: "Why?", a WIP

Thanks Ruthie. I like to get the eyes first, then move around the face. I think I will work on the hand now, just because I am familiar with what colors I used on the face, just to keep things straight... then on to the hair and background.

Thank you Donna. The wrinkles are really difficult. I think what is important is to have lots of lost and found edges. It keeps things more believable.

Thank you so much Allain, Cat, studiospirit, and Mel D.

Thank you Robert. Giraults are great for portraits, aren't they?

Hey Merethe! Welcome back, we've missed you here! I took a break over the holidays, now I'm back into it.

Thank you abstract23, minkle, Zoe and Nicole.

Absolutely wonderful work, Chris! The eyes just draw you in. Love love love the colors you've used for her skin tone.

I've missed your WIPs!

Just like everyone else, I love eveything about this. Particularly love the pose. Oh, and those glasses are superb.

I'm really enjoying watching your progress, seeing your pastel palette and comments about time spent looking and looking.
As one who is new to pastel being patient with work is difficult.

Mostly she's a wonderful subject you've brought vividly to life!

Great work Chris! It has a wide range of color and your attention to detail and patience in developing shows- your work also has a gentle quality in the light-

Re: "Why?", a WIP

Thank you Kris! Hoping to get more time this week, I'm itching to finish this one!

Thanks Tanja, I appreciate it.

Thank you Divasin. My approach is to work a bit, then step back to observe. I find it very useful as it gives the painting time to "speak" to me. Things start to jump out, good and bad, which really helps me work things out. I'm always looking for things I don't like, asking myself "what's wrong with this?"...... for me it's the only way I can be objective.

Thank you Ken. In the beginning I wasn't sure if I should pump up the lighting.... I've been holding back because I am thinking the subject needs soft lighting.... that's what it's telling me. So far I'm listening, and it seems to be working. It's part of the story...at least for me it is. I usually like dramatic lighting, so I'm trying to combine both somehow. Some dramatic cast shadows (some interesting shapes), yet not too dramatic in the way of contrast..

Chris, this is stunning - not only in technique, but in the emotional factor that is coming through in her face.

Re: "Why?", a WIP

Thank you so much Kathryn, that was most important to me, getting that emotion to come through. I am so pleased to hear that it is.

Thank you so much Sherry. What a nice thing to say, I am blushing right now.....

Thanks so much Jen. Hoping to get more time on this soon, things have been a bit crazy. Nothing bad, just busy....

Re: "Why?", a WIP

A little more done on this one. Lucky for me her hair is red, I think it adds a nice "edge" to the color palette. More work needs to be done to the hair that you see, there's not enough texture yet. I had a hard time deciding on what colors to use. Now that I have that worked out I can move ahead. I actually erased my entire first attempt at the hair as it wasn't working. I didn't want what I had there to influence my new choices of colors, thus the erasure procedure... good thing Wallis paper can take abuse, I sure gave it plenty on this one

Re: "Why?", a WIP

The hair looks great, Chris! Just enough detail to say hair but not overdone. You have painted so much expression in her eyes and her mouth - this painting is so much more than a portrait.
