Topsail Beach

I took this picture on vacation at Topsail Beach about 2 years ago. I painted this one fast (maybe 3 hours) compared to the Lone Cypress. I worked with a big brush until I got to the foliage. I feel a little bit better about this one although I am sure there are issues (C&C no problem at all). The sky looks much better in person. The photo makes it look a bit choppy.

Oil on linen 12 x 16.

Yes, feel better! this one is really fine. Wonderful color and brush strokes in the sky and the foreground is convincing and works well with the whole. Great work!

There are many nice elements in this one. I really like the water and foreground. Gary

Re: Topsail Beach

Wes, I think we are witnessing your emergence from a coccoon of tight painting into a wonderfully colourful, impressionistic butterfly, fluttering off into that beautiful sky! No seriously, it's super and bet it looks even better IRL: it's sooo frustrating when the photo doesn't truly represent how a painting looks, but I imagine it is a struggle everyone has, and we inherently make allowances for that. Great job, especially in just three hours!

Re: Topsail Beach

Very nicely done.

Not sure where Topsail beach is, but this looks a lot like the Outer Banks (OBX) in NC. I did a group of seascapes very similar to this on vacation in OBX painting one a day so I could give one to each of the families that were staying with us.

You did a great job catching the feel of the beach. I like the colors and the loose brushwork.

Way to go Wes! You emphasized the drama and beauty in the sky and gave us a lovely view of the beach as well.

Re: Topsail Beach

Thanks so much Boogiechile and Gary!
Thanks Bizz! I am trying my best to emerge from my painting slump. Hopefully a breakthrough is around the corner....
Thanks Dorrart! Topsail is in NC east of Wilmington. It took a pretty big hit from the last hurricane so I hope there was not too much damage. It was a beautiful place to watch dramatic skies. I would love to see your paintings of the OBX....
Thank you Michael, Ginny, Donna, Mikael, and Ann! I really appreciate your comments...

Re: Topsail Beach

I love what you did with the sky. (and the rest of the painting for that matter)

That's something I want to work on in my painting, not just my usual back and forth streaks.

Thanks for posting.

Re: Topsail Beach

Wow, Wes! That's incredible!! I like how you put your own stamp on the scene. It has a lot more drama in it than the photo! Excellent!!

My brother and his wife live in Wilmington and evacuated because of that hurricane. The big issue with that storm was once it made landfall, there was nothing to push it away, like a cold front, so it sat there soaking the place for days on end. Similar to the scenario that unfolded in Houston last year. It was a week before they could return, and they were lucky. Most couldn't get back in for almost two weeks because of flooding. They were extremely fortunate with minimal damage to their place and no flooding issues. It's getting close to that time of year again. We'll see what's in store for the East Coast this year.

Re: Topsail Beach

Thanks Matt and Randy! I had heard the flooding was really bad but glad to hear your brother and sister in law were ok. We certainly need a break from hurricanes. They seem to have gotten worse over the past decade....
