MAY 2019 Different Strokes Challenge

WELCOME TO THE MAY 2019 DIFFERENT STROKES CHALLENGE

All entries must be for this challenge and in acrylics - any type of acrylic.
Join in the discussion about the project - it's friendly and fun to learn how others are coping/struggling/thriving!!! But no visual images!
Help can be gained from asking but also from looking for resource materials elsewhere - the RIL e.g.

A 'reveal' date for all is 21st of the month - that gives us 3 weeks to make the work, plus an extra week for latecomers.

Interpret the ideas any way you wish - be inventive, realistic, influenced by another style or '...ism' - it's up to you!

PLEASE DO NOT UPLOAD WORK TO THE THREAD BEFORE THE 21ST OF THE MONTH.** Much more exciting and fun to see what 'masterpieces' appear!
If work is uploaded early it will be moved to a safe place until 21st.

At the end of the month the thread /discussion will be closed and a new challenge will begin.

**Please note, the single 'reveal' date is chosen so that we do not influence each other with our individual interpretations ......
that's the whole point of it being called 'Different Strokes'!
By all means ask questions in the thread or initiate discussion about the challenge - just don't post images!!!

The challenge this month is:

A Landscape with something happening in it. Eg. A field of cattle with the Farmer emptying a bag of feed into a trough. But remember itís a landscape so this should happen in the middle distance. A Camel Train in the desert. A family picnicking at the beach/beside a stream/ on the edge of a wood.

It can be just animals, but they must be doing something. Reference. The World, The internet, Life. I seldom do a painting without learning something, purely through researching a painting. This is pretty far out of my comfort zone, as you may know I do mostly Marine pics. However I painted this yesterday afternoon as my entry!. First mistake. Itís watercolour.! But it is an example of the type of thing I would like to see in the Challenge.
Landscape, reasonably detailed , not a blurry background. The 'event' not too near ( this could have bee a bit further away). And a foreground, because I needed something to hide some of the 'stubble'. My research (and learning part) was finding out about Horse drawn farming equipment.
So thatís it. Itís up to you now.
Happy painting, and enjoy
Jim

Thanks for hosting Jim. I love painting landscapes but this will be little more challenging than usual.

Great challenge idea, Jim. I will look forward to coming up with something for the Reveal Date on the 21st.

Certainly, but remember the landscape is the Show, the rest is props and Players.

What I hear from you is that the challenge is also to learn and share something about our paintings...

Hopefully we might all learn something from it. Mostly it is to add interest to what can sometimes appear to be an unfinished painting. You really canít get away with calling a bunch of buildings a Farm. Put in a Tractor, even just the back end of one sticking out of a barn. Little brown black and white blobs and you have 'chooks' fluffy white blobs for sheep. Hang some laundry on a line, shows there are People about. Now you have a Farm. Not really difficult. I think they call it 'dressing the set' in the Film and Theatrical industry.

Re: MAY 2019 Different Strokes Challenge

Another really excellent challenge! I have been doing landscapes with no people or animals since I'm just too nervous to tackle figures. I do think these kinds of things can add a lot, they can pop a painting up to a new level of interest. E.g. Constable.

Great watercolor, too, I love the mid-ground detail and the tufts on the barb wire...

....sorry to 'rock the boat' but....is a Seascape going to be acceptable?

My idea is 'something going on in the sea' ....as viewed from the beach.

Re: MAY 2019 Different Strokes Challenge

Okay, I have a plan! I'm surprised I didn't look for the challenge all day. Last month I was waiting for the time to change in England to see if the challenge was going to be up! I think I was disappointed that no one had volunteered to host and I certainly don't feel ready to do so myself. Thanks, Jim!

Dave, I think with a bit of sea in it . As with the example above , a beach scene, but mostly land. I think would be ok

It's a great challenge Jim - and thanks for posting it
I agree, life adds so much to landscape painting - can I send people to John Constable, for example? - he often included 'life' in his works ........just search for him, lots of links but the colour on many reproductions is not good!
