Ai - thanks and yes there is a bar of soap that you wrap with wool and then agitate the wool to "felt" around the soap. Apparently as you use the soap and it gets smaller so too will the wool around the soap (so you don't end up with a full-size pouch and a sliver of soap rattling around in there)

Scatty, the dragon is so cute. Funny kitty. Nice pot, I love ceramics. You do graphite very well.

Hi, Ai.

EP, Interesting soap covers. Don't think I would like that, felt is not for me. Ha. I like your colors and shapes. The avocado makes me hungry.

Took the day off yesterday. It was such a beautiful day, baseball and then sitting on the porch in the evening. Maybe a sketch day today.

Re: Scavenger Hunt #585: Apr 26 - May 4

I did a couple of very quick sketches in the big book using a Prismacolor 01 and added some color with colored pencils.

Number 1, I, me - not very good so hoping it doesn't show the real me.
Number 2, L, lemon or lime - juice for both

Jo - thank you. I haven't tried the soaps yet (the workshop person said to let it dry for 2 days ... but maybe that was only for if you are giving as a gift). Good to "see" you. I have seen lemon and lime juice in bottles like those.

Re: Scavenger Hunt #585: Apr 26 - May 4

item #1 - "understanding something"

small plastic coaster gizmo with Degas horses

This takes the title of worst sketch ever by anyone, so please be patient. It means a lot anyway. Here's why (skip over this at will ):

Monday, things reminded me so much of my (ex-racehorse) horse, who I miss beyond words. Spring. The green hills and grass and dandelions (yummy!) everywhere. He reveled in the sun, and motion, and the fresh green stuff to eat everywhere. And circumstances Monday also reminded me how my horse refused to allow his spirit to be broken by smilingly cruel humans, double-talking humans, humans who would say they loved horses while mistreating them (including him) beyond the pale for years on end.

But we found each other in time.

And I felt his continuing spirit protecting me and guarding me today.

And so I brought out this little piece of plastic, and decided to sketch it in the roughest lines (misty-eyed as I was) because of what it meant to me on day one, and what it meant to me later.

I bought it after saving for awhile. I only got I think about 25 cents a week allowance, and it never changed, and it was turned over to me with anger. So I think it took awhile even though it only cost maybe a dollar or two.

But I loved it for reasons not entirely obvious at the time. There was something beneath the surface.

Then, a number of years later, my horse and I found each other. That's when I realized that in my version of the Universe, I recognized the sensibility of my horse within this painting on its little piece of plastic. And (again in my version of the Universe), it's as if the future me spoke back down the years to the earlier me and let me know that this represented my future horse, a horse with a heart of gold who would lay down his life to protect me day after day after day, despite being vilified by many humans who crossed his path.

In my sketch, I circled the one that is my horse, the one refusing to give in, the one farthest away, in the middle.

To make any sense of my nonsensical awful sketch, you'll have to see the real Degas (and Joe, Degas is one of my very favorites too, though I become very emotional [and upset] over the whole horse racing thing. But that's a story for another day.) Anyway here's the real Degas (which seems to be called either "Chevaux de course" or "The Parade".......

Ai - I think markers are tough. You did nice job on all 3 items but how others have commented the pencil pops off the page 👍🏽

Scatty - Nice shading on all 3. Nice smoothie finish to vase and the cat but the dragon is super. Cast shadow really makes it work. How does it attach to your ear?

1 egg done in multiple grades of graphite in 8.5x5.5 in sketchbook.

Kept sketching
Joe

EP - Nice set of sketches. Love the fuzzy soap.

Pine Cone. - I comment through lists eyes as well. No doubt your horse and you understood each other and I am sure his spirit guides you.

Jo - I think you captured the hair well. Nice work on the citrus juice bottles.

Joe, the egg is eggseptionally nice. Great shading. Thanks.

I sketched at Gene's med appointment.
Number 3, under. The purse was mostly under the chair.
Number 4, tea. There was a cuppa something abandoned on the room divider. We'll say it was tea.
Done in the 5.5 x 8.5 inch travel sketchbook with a new Micron 02

Jo - Good use of waiting time. ‘New’ pen? You use them a lot. How long does one last when used regularly? Most of mine dry out oh and that sure looks like tea from here.

Keep sketching
Joe

Re: Scavenger Hunt #585: Apr 26 - May 4

Scatty — Love the shape and glazing on your ceramic vase! Cool dragon but I wish you could wear it like you want. Ditto Joe's question. Adorable kitten, full of personality

EP — Cool group of sketches! As always, love your colors and all those intriguing items. Your pothos is lovely and I visited the link (and then some), and learned some good stuff - thanks! Your felted soaps captured my heart - awww that paw print and the abstract colors and crackly pattern... Thanks for explaining about the soap and the wool. I never knew about that but it sounds fun and useful!

Jo — Thanks! I LOVE your mischievous selfie! And your bottles are so beautifully lit and colored that I thought they were perfume bottles until I read your words Interesting waiting room slices-of-life sketches... yup, I agree with you both... definitely tea... is that a hint of cinnamon in the air?

Joe — Thanks! Lovely egg shape, shadow, sense. How did you keep it from rolling onto the floor before you finished your sketch? Or maybe it did end up on the floor and Ralph got an extra meal My Microns often dry out too. What are we doing wrong?
