Everyone has done so nicely so far. I will comment individually later.

Here is my version of the forest path. It's 2.5" x 3.5", acrylic on stretched canvas.

Re: May Monthly Challenge and Chat, 2019

Thanks vmrs for the lovely inspirational challenge photos.

KreativeK, nice edit of the image, nicely detailed and painted. Good water effects. Also, good job on the tiny school house painting. Nicely cropped. Interesting colors.

tuscanny, very nice WC of the pelican. Nicely observed touches of color. Funny story about your mom.

hibiscus17, good work on the portrait. Pleasant laid back expression, like the guide photo.

Re: May Monthly Challenge and Chat, 2019

Thanks dorrart.

The Oriole, as promised. Not one of my better efforts. Lately I've been quite off in my painting, feeling a bit unfocused. But enjoying this forum as per every visit. Some great motivational ideas and presentations happening here and in the other sub forums.

This piece is the same as last post in that I've used leftover pearlised blue card. I've trimmed the image down to focus just on image. Cheers.

Dorr, love your version of the path, very well painted!

Lawrence, your bird is so realistic he could break out in song any moment!

Lawrence, for a minute I thought the oriel was a photo but you did a terrific job on it. So realistic and colorful.

I tried one of the images with the big tree to see how it would come out in gouache. May have time to try another.

Dorrart, your forest is lovely, I like your use of lights and darks, it looks way better than the photo's lighting.

Lawrence, what a beautiful bird.

Re: May Monthly Challenge and Chat, 2019

hibiscus17, the Oriole turned out great. I love the way you simplified the background colors, the choice sets the oriole in sharp relief giving it dimension and realism. Very nice.

ArtsyMom, you captured the flowers and colors very nicely in the gouache.

Thank you all who have commented on mine. Appreciated.

Re: May Monthly Challenge and Chat, 2019

Cheers Christel, Kay, Lil, Virginia and dorrart for commenting on the bird. The background was messy in my eyes but at least green and orange always go well together so my gaffe all that noticeable.

Was drawn to the path in your piece, dorrart. It still draws me each time I look at it. Can't really explain why; it may have to do with the light effect as it moves between the lit background and the darker foreground. Virginia expressed it better.

Lil, your lovely piece has reminded me to try gouache again. I used it differently long long ago, not fully utilising it as intended. So I am curious to see what the possibilities hold now.

The pelican pieces. What can I say other than I'm glad Kay and Christel chose them as challenges. I'm presently doing some large birds for a project of mine and they are not as easy as I originally thought.

Re: May Monthly Challenge and Chat, 2019

Lil love your little painting it is an invitation ito walk down the path, past the tree and a reminder to enjoy the day and stop and smell the flowers. I like the way that you played the grayish purple behind the red floral area.
Dorrart you handled the greens very nicely in this painting. You played the pinkish sky against the greens. Nice handling of your dark and light areas.
Lawrence, I think the bird is just lovely. I canít imagine you ever being off when you paint.
