Monkey Seamstress

I did this on black Mitientes, 8x10", Prismacolor pencils. The sewing machine was my childhood toy and the monkey is a Ty Beanie Baby. The cloth is one of my hankies. The sewing box was just added from imagination.

I am still learning colored pencils, so I would appreciate any critiques.

Re: Monkey Seamstress

I really like this very much. You have a great imagination using items of your own and from your childhood and putting them together for this lovely work. Great composition and so cute. Lovely for a childs room.

Re: Monkey Seamstress

Ginny & Eleanor, thank you both so much. The black dots show up more in the photo than in real life. I'm still trying to get colored pencil down in the pits of the paper to make it smooth. But sometimes I like the rough textured look, too.

This is adorable! Very imaginative, and well executed. You captured a really nice shine on the spools of thread.

Re: Monkey Seamstress

You are handling the colored pencils well. But since you asked for crits, I examined a bit. The first thing I noticed is that the sewing machine would likely have a shadow under it. I see you have your light source coming in from the left, but there would likely still be some shadow under the machine. There was something about the monkey that I was seeing as well, so I pulled the image into grayscale to check it out. I think there could be a bit more contrast of the lights/darks on the monkey. You see how the brighter thread and fabric pull the eye? Start by pumping up the highlights on the monkey. That might do it. If not, just darken the deepest shadows just a touch. Not too much because you still want him to look soft, not hard edged. Does that make sense?

Thank you for your input. I thought I had put a shadow under the sewing machine but I see it's not dark enough. And, I see what you mean about the thread and fabric pulling the eye away from the monkey.

It's a charming finish on what appears to be a challenging project. Love it.

This must have been challenging to draw. I really like it. Such a cute idea.
