Re: Scavenger Hunt #583: Apr 10 - 19

Jo -Nice pen work. Another thing on my wish list. Work up nerve to draw directly in pen. Gene was nice to model.

Today’s hand. Done in multiple grades of graphite in a 8.5x5.5 inch sketch book, about an hour using different technique than last 2. EP can it also count as left hand and thumbnail for hunt? Need monitor’s ruling.

Keep sketching
Joe

Re: Scavenger Hunt #583: Apr 10 - 19

Jo - well done on hand/fist for Apr 11 - glad the challenge hit a bell for you. I've been doing quick people sketches (1 min), 20 a day, for a week, so I haven't done hands in detail yet. Yahoo on the Apr 12 hand. Sure it can count for left hand and thumbnail... that's two done from the list

Scatty - ooh I also hate the mark from the elastic on socks. But I also detest socks that slip down.

WP - hello!

Jo - well done on the left eye/ear/hand/thumb. I had in mind to do something like that composition

I'm off to a demo but I hope to sketch for the hunt tonight.

Cheers,

Re: Scavenger Hunt #583: Apr 10 - 19

.
I have something picked out to sketch but haven't found a moment to start 😶

Scatty — Interest-filled sketches but my fav has to be your sweet Nellie, beautifully portrayed 🐾

Joe — Your 2nd hand could be a statue in its fierce depth and fidelity. To me, your 3rd hand seems calmer, yet retains that fidelity.

White Pen — Welcome home!!! You mentioned you have some unposted sketches from past events. Please post them if it becomes safe and if you get a chance!!! I'd love to see them

Jo — Nice sketches, with warmth!

EP — I love your use of color and white - unique. I can't get my white gel pen to work very well. What's your secret?

PC - thanks! This was my first time using a white gel ink pen so I don't have a secret - I was just scribbling. We'll see if over time I develop a technique. By the way this was on toned paper (gray) - so I thought the white could pop more. And it did

EP — I'm a huge fan of soft grays and white, so your sketch pages were especially evocative for me. You found the perfect balance, and your paper and white did indeed enhance one another, and all the colors taken together. As for mine, maybe I just need a newer gel pen. Mine only works in fits and starts but it must be years old

This weekend has been busy. I did not get any hands done.

EP - I am with Pine Cone. The white gel really makes your sketches pop. Can’t wait til you develop a technique.

Pine Cone - Thank you for kind words

Keep sketching
Joe

A while back we talked about porpoises and I mentioned the great memories of them riding our bow wake. Today I came across this photo in Pinterest.

Joe, your hand on your knee is super fine. Yep, it is sometimes hard to find sketching time. Thanks for the photo of the dolphins. I am so not a boat person that I can't even imagine what submarine time would be. I wouldn't be able to move.

EP, love the work on the toned paper. Fun "seeing" you. The second set of hands are great, too.

Thanks and hi, Pine Cone.

Hope to sketch today.

Did another little pastel plein air for practice, about 1 1/2 hours, total. Out on the driveway. This is on a piece of Colourfix sanded paper reuse....

Number 5 left turn

Re: Scavenger Hunt #583: Apr 10 - 19

item #1 - left behind

grieving over what the fire at Notre-Dame took, and wondering what it left behind

I was using this dictionary tonight to try and find words to attach to my sorrow.

Here are some of the words I found:

..... je suis désolée

..... je suis de tout cœur avec vous Paris

..... j'ai le cœur triste

Back to comment soon.

Full disclosure: The sketch was so pale it was somewhat invisible, and I didn't want to continue sketching as my mind is elsewhere. So I did something I normally never do. I darkened it using a single adjustment in Art Studio Pro. If you want to have it taken down as a result of this digital assistance, please contact a moderator to have it removed.

Tools:

iPad Pro, Apple Pencil.

Procreate app for the sketch.

Art Studio Pro app for the crop, darkening, and export.

Process:

Virtual pencil.

Freehand, no drafting tools or tracing, digital or otherwise.

No grid or smoothing or symmetry or cloning, digital or otherwise.

Gray was darkened in a single step in Art Studio Pro to make the sketch visible.

Reference located a few inches away.

Pine Cone, yes, sad about Notre-Dame. Good thing that no one was hurt. Memories are saved.....
Your adjusted sketch is no problem. The sketches look different on different monitors and in different browsers/programs. Most images have some sort of adjustment .. size, color, etc. You can hope for close to the real thing. like your dictionary. No French dictionaries in my house. Just Spanish/English.

I sketched a couple of pages in the big book this morning with the Prismacolor 03. FYI, I'm still not halfway through the book.

Number 6, leftover - my left over fried Portabella mushrooms. Odd texture with the soft mushrooms and the crunchy, too salty batter. Challenge hand.
Number 7, left handed scissors - not sure if these really are but they are hard to use if you pick them up wrong. Must be for both hands, kitchen shears. Challenge hand.

Joe - thank you

Jo - thank you. Mmmmm pastel plein air. Yay leftovers. Kitchen shears are indeed difficult to use if one picks them up wrong.

PC - good job on the sketch.

I did a few more hands. Graphite, ink (two colours), and dry Inktense on 5x7" toned sketchbook page.

Joe — Wow, those Pinterest porpoises are amazing! You've actually seen something like that in real life? What was it like? Am I allowed to ask whereabouts you were at the time?

Okay, speaking of dolphins and such, you might get a kick out of this. Yesterday's APOD shows a dolphin on Jupiter You can check it out here:

https://apod.nasa.gov/apod/ap190415.html 😍

It's one of the astonishing photos from the current Juno mission at Jupiter. This one is processed by the extraordinarily talented citizen scientist Gerald Eichstädt as well as Avi Solomon (not sure if he is also a citizen scientist).

EP — I finally realized that I was recognizing some of your graceful, beautifully lit signs. What a lovely series!

Jo — Thanks for understanding. Your corner of the world is beautifully lit. Lovely. And your new sketches are wonderful as well. Love your hands!
