Re: From my archive

A Mosquito drops a 'Highball' aimed at HMS Malaya during tests of the weapon in Loch Striven. Developed from the Dambusters bouncing bomb 618 sqn trained with it and eventually were deployed to the Far East. The Bomb was never used in anger, and a further developement 'Baseball' ( a similar weapon to be launched from MTBs) was canceled with the end of the war

Re: From my archive

My impression of what it might have looked like!
While developing 'Up Keep' the Dam Bursting bomb, they were working on Highball, a smaller bomb, two being capable capable of being carried by the Mosquito.
Originally for use against the Tirpitz. When this was no longer a requirement, a squadron, 618, was formed to operate in the Far East against major Japanese Naval Ships. WW2 ended before the Squadron could go into action.
This is my impression of what it may have been like, RAF Mosquitos escorted by FAA Corsairs attack a Nagato class Battle ship and IJS Mogami.
W/C 14 X 10 inches not very accurate a/c but they are pretty small and it's all imaginary
ps The bomb is slightly ahead and above the last splash. Black ball with white center.

I did it for an ex Officer who served on her. Can’t remember his name. It was a few years back.

Yip, Suez Canal been through it a few times. First time 1957 not long after the Suez Crisis. Still sunken ships in places. Also 24 hrs before the Six Day’s War started.
