Ta for that info Chas. I do have some raw umber and would like to have a go at glazing my latest painting. I have never done this before so I take it that you just mix up a very very weak solution with raw umber and coat the painting very quickly.

I use W&N glazing solution; but yes a weak solution of paint is used to overlay a transparent layer. I often apply the glaze over all of the painting as I find it creates a common hue to the painting creating cohesion in appearance.

Sometimes an oil painting can be bloody hard work; and this is one such canvas. Not helped by a plethora of other business that has taken precedent with my time - hopefully I can now get the skyscape sorted before deciding whether the F4 is an RAF or a Navy one - both of which are applicable to the story being told.

That painting is bloody amazing...but I'm not happy with the F4.
I think the painting looks better without anything else in there. But it's only my opinion.
I don't know what else I would like to see in there. But it looks really good..

I also see what looks like a human figure in the clouds!
I would vote for the Navy Phantom.

I am now happy with both aircraft although they are not yet finished. The sky is another matter with part of it very nice and other parts - - 'needy' The scene shows an intercept of a Canberra T17 by Royal Navy Phantoms (there will be another). The Canberra T17 was a highly sophisticated intruder that could use several on-board toys to deceive air defence radar.

That Phantom looks neat Chas...the whole painting is a joy. Looking at your painting keeps me going at my own attempts.

This painting is slowly but surely coming together; but I am not enjoying painting it. Sometimes when you try new techniques and procedures, the verdict is to continue painting in the way that you enjoy - that maintains creativity and enthusiasm - and that gets good results. I will see this through; but my mind is on my summer project that will be inclusive of highly detailed work; otherwise known as my comfort zone.

Another layer finished - so what is left to do?
1) Repair the edges that have been overpainted whilst working on the skyscape.
2) Appropriate levels of detail i.e. more on the Canberra than the F4 because of perceived distance.
3) Apply glaze - which has more impact on the painting than any other phase.
