Re: (Whatever happened to) WOYE January 2019

Yikes, that photo is reading brown to me, too.

Just did a check in Corel here to check my sight (I design flyers for work occasionally so they pay for my upgrades, I just have to use one of my licenses here) and even the objective machine eye is fooled.

Re: WOYE (What's On Your Easel) 2019

I've changed the title of the thread to make it ongoing for 2019 - it should be easier for people to check progress (I hope!)
If the thread get's too unwieldy, we can always start a new one later!

Re: WOYE (What's On Your Easel) 2019

Re-energized by my "Impressionist" experiment and started on a 16x20 from the same outing around Waterford's locks and the rural cemetery there and the huge one in Albany. This is from a sneaky pic I took of my girlfriend unawares while she patiently waited for me to finish photographing the lock from every conceivable angle.

(I've picked out about 15 good pics from that day...many burial marker and monumental statue pieces in queue, haha! I still have to sort through hundreds of hiking pics from 2018 to find some good references, too, for variety...not to mention hundreds and hundreds of pics of my ratties.)

Charcoal sketch (had to re-do the treeline up top)

Blocking in the background trees.

Re: WOYE (What's On Your Easel) 2019

I hadn't painted for several years but recently started up again after moving abroad and finding art supplies abundant and much cheaper than in my home country. Hopefully, I'll have more work to share soon!

Does anyone have suggestions for photographing paintings? I can't seem to find a way that doesn't include light reflecting off of the surface.

Re: WOYE (What's On Your Easel) 2019

Very nice vase painting.

The best way I have found is to photograph them outside on an overcast day. If I can't do that because of rain, then I place it near a window to get natural light, which is usually pretty even on a rainy day.

When that is impossible because of sun or if it's night, then I lay them down on my kitchen counter away from the overhead lights. The colour isn't as true, but I can find a space where I don't get glare.

Occasionally I have managed it in my studio by fiddling with the placement of lights, the easel and fiddling with the blinds. But it usually takes effort to adjust everything.

Thanks ColinS, I'll take them outside on the next overcast day. All the lights in my apartment are fluorescent and will glare.

Re: WOYE (What's On Your Easel) 2019

Thanks, Colin!

And good tips on photographing with the overcast day idea, gotta try that myself. I use daylight bulbs in my basement “studio” and will use frosted shades to prevent glare but I still have to mess with placement.

I have a daylight lamp in my studio too which helps. But it is stillhard to escape glare in there.

Re: WOYE (What's On Your Easel) 2019

There's a thread in the Information Kiosk about photo'ing work - it's by Idylbrush, about 5 or 6 down from the top..... I also use the 'outdoor' or near a awindow method!!

Ken - good start.

Kachina - welcome here and hope you can share lots more work ... this looks rather lovely despite photo problems .... the body of the vase is very good - just watch that top ellipse!

Thanks! I'm planning on covering the top of the vase with something else. No worries, I'm not going to leave it like that!
