Fish Scales?

Greetings! I am trying to find some close-up photos of fish scales. I've looked on free photo sharing websites but I haven't found anything suitable. I'd like something that shows a little light and shadow with an interesting interplay of colors. Every photo I've found so far reads as rather flat, or is not taken up close enough. Anyone have any fish scale photos they'd be willing to share?

Thanks in advance.

Re: Fish Scales?

I need images that I can legally use. I did search google for images initially and did not find what I was searching for. I have looked at sites where people donate photos and grant permission to artists to use them, but I haven't found exactly what I am looking for there. I found a few images on stock photo websites that involve paying for the photos, but with the extended licenses that are required it comes out to about $180 per image! I can't afford that right now. This is why I decided to come here to make an inquiry.

Re: Fish Scales?

There's a fish image in this week's WDE challenge here - if a higher resolution image would be any good, contact the starter of the thread, 'breadmerchant' - he might be able to help.

I wonder if any of the Marine/Biological Institutes in your country might be able to help? Possibly worth a try?

$180 for a ref seems steep!

Re: Fish Scales?

Which image sharing sites you've gotten these. I think the photos on these sites are put to sell.

Re: Fish Scales?

In a town about an hours drive from me, there is a fish-tank place where they have a small "zoo" of reptiles and many huge fish. Asking to photograph the animals (without a flash) will most likely be allowed, and what have you got to lose? If you know of such a place you can get decent close up photos of fish.

Sadly, I have a 75 gallon tank of loaches and catfish and they have very skin like scales. Not noticeable scaley, and are also way too small and fast to be photographed.

adding: the arowana and the gar are the fish with the most obvious scales. Arowana are gorgeous, but get too large for a 75 gallon tank.

Re: Fish Scales?

What exactly are you looking for? References or a complete photo?

If you are using a bunch of photos for reference, as your references are blended and so generic to be unrecognizable in your finished art, you should be fine.

If you need something complete I might be able to help, I own some nice bettas and have a good camera and lens.

Re: Fish Scales?

For some info

I own a gold/silver betta like this:

I own a copper like this:

I found this image of betta scales (opaque black base with emerald iridescent over):

Up close, fish scales are like sea shells, they have rings that radiate from the attachment point out to the edge. They grow outward in rings.
