Well... this just in... "Pizza" 2nd place watercolors. "Seventy Eighth Street" an Honorable mention. "Wired" was bypassed by the jurors.

Congratulations! You seem to generally do well with sales at this event. Worth driving for.

Well... "Wired" was hung in the hall next to the Ladies Room. Still, I like the black frame & matt... and this piece.

Re: MfM does the STEMS event again

...and here it is May, 2019 and it's STEMS time again here in borderland, (the Kansas / Missouri border).

I've invested heavily. Four 1/8x12x24 inch, (3x30.5x61 CM) panels. I'll get these and a bunch of 140# watercolor paper stamped at the May 17th opening. The panels will get cut down to the 12x16 inch, (30.5x40.6 CM) size of the paper. When I'm happy with the plein air watercolors I'll glue them to these panels. Then I have bought some "Art Resin" brand clear acrylics from Blick and will pour them with that stuff. I have four panels so if one is goofy I will still have three to enter for judging.

Anyway, given the lack of white mules available for tatooing that's what I've come up with for this year.

Next year? I'm thinking of died spagetti. I've a year to figure that out.

Comments?

Re: MfM does the STEMS event again

About a week until the starting gun fires. I need to get cutting on the panels to match the paper size. Maybe I'll take the four 4" long scraps and super glue them into another 12x16" panel, (?). With bends to and fro. Paint a busy urban scene to glue to it. Hard to acrylic pour that though.

Then I need to seal the panels with something clear.

Gonna be busy. Still regret the mules idea did not work out. Would have been fun pulling up to the gallery with a truck load of frisky tatooed mules. "Check the rules guys!"

Re: MfM does the STEMS event again

In my stash I found a block of Arches 12x16 inch, 140#, rough watercolor paper. I'll peel off say ten sheets and get them stamped when STEMS opens.

I cut my four panels down to 12x16 inches (30.5x40.6 CM). This gave me four pieces of scrap and I superglued pairs into two 12x15.75 inch... almost equal length panels. This went only fairly well and I probably won't want to use those two for STEMS. I'll need to seal this wood next. Thinking of a thin coat of white acrylics on the side I'll glue the paper to. Then I'll have to give that a rough sandpapering. Plus I need to glue a sort of crating to the back to prevent warping and give a surface to attach hanging wire to.

A week to go. Busy, busy !

Did you ever try Dorland Was to seal your watercolours Dave?

Re: MfM does the STEMS event again

Hi Doug:

No, I don't know For Land Was. I've been thinking of some sort of wood sealer from a hardware shop house painting department.

Today I bought some 0.5" x 1.5" wood to build a crating on the panel backs. This will reduce warping and provide anchor points for a hanging wire. I am going to use a product called "Liquid Nails" to glue this to the panels. I have made an actual size sketch to determine how to cut the wood.

I also now have a creme brulee torch and its fuel. An important gadget... it's used to pop the bubbles in the liquid acrylic when poured and spread.

Almost a week left before the start. I'll have to get cracking on paintings because of the time I will need to pour acrylics and have them set up hard.

I may not have mules... but I'm gonna have fun doing something new to me.

Re: MfM does the STEMS event again

Sorry Dave, spell checker problems, should be Dorland Wax. CharM uses it to protect gallery wrapped watercolours.
