Re: March 2013 Watercolor Challenge - Tulips

Nothing says spring like tulips-and I've got spring fever, so great choice, Doug! I love your painting, Caryl, and Larry, what a fun interpretation! This is going to be a beauty and I hope to tackle it myself sometime this week.

Larry, what a unique and beautiful approach...great design and rendering of the tulips!
Caryl, your tulip petals look like velvet! Beautifully done! Thanks for sharing your palette...I wondered about the use of Opera as well, but you seem to have taken care of that. Very nice painting, indeed!

Beautiful tulips everyone! I really like the mill. I have a couple of places within blocks of me that look like the corn mill, but they are for fertilizer and feed. I think I might try when I get my watercolor paper I ordered.

Caryl & Larry...both paintings look great...

Margarete...I should listen to you...now I can't stop thinking about that darn corn mill & am going to have to give it a try instead of the tulips! Wish me luck...

Caryl, your painting is just BEAUTIFUL; those blooms look so realistic. You did a fantastic job on the color. (sorry they gave you fits)

Larry, I love what you did for your background. Very fitting...your blooms are lovely too.

I love how you did the red tulips, Caryl! They really glow and look effortless.
Larry, your bg is perfect for tulips! You are so clever.

Re: March 2013 Watercolor Challenge - Tulips

Larry, this wonderful...the soft background (realistic) and those wonderful tulips (graphic). So nice, and a most lovely lesson in contrasts!

Maribeth....Much Much Luck! There goes a braver painter than I!

Caryl, I never thought of using Opera as a base color, and then sealing all with spray....which I do use. Hmmmmmmm. A wonderful way out of a difficult problem. In fact, I won a great eBay auction, and included was some Opera/Opus...! I will paint with it as base, will paint over it with some lightfast, spray it, and then on to the windowsill ! May have to wait until some sunny weather, but thankfully NO snow here!

Hi Fellow Challengers! I've finished mine... It's 8x10 on 140# Saunders Waterford cp paper, gallery wrapped. I'll varnish it tomorrow. I loved being able to bring a little Spring garden into my Studio!

Doug, Caryl and Larry, your interpretations are beautiful!

Placing them in a vase is a great idea, Doug... Caryl, your spray is beautifully rich and Larry, I really like your pen work!

Here is my contribution. It is on 140 lb. Strathmore watercolor paper (9 x 12 inches).

C&C are welcome. Sorry image is a bit blurry.

Char! Wonderful green and red balance. What green or mix did you use? Love the splatterwork.

Michelle! Lovely! I especially like the peek a boo of the pot foil to balance the red of the tulips in composition.

I really enjoy the interpretations of the challenges!

Two beautiful paintings! Char, your rendering of the flowers and leaves are expertly done- great values and hues!
Michelle, I love your interpretation - it has such great movement and energy, while still retaining beautiful form and color...very dynamic!
