(hope this works ...)

Blake, Your tulips are fantastic, thank you for the comments on my painting. The interesting thing is that you have painted in the style that I strive to get, so maybe mine were bordering on loose wheras yours are really loose, beautiful.

I would love to see the mill painted in this style, I will look out for it.

Ah thank you, you're too kind. I love painting flowers but I don't think I have ever painted a building. Painting that mill photo would be a big stretch. I am trying to do the Amish photo right now. People are also a big stretch. I'm already in a rut.

Hi - did attempt to paint the tulips - had lots of problems with the wrap - will post this not so good painting and try again - might leave off the wrap on the next one. Thank you for the challenge.

I think if you put a glaze of Permanent Rose on the wrap it will even out.

Blake,
I echo Rachel - your fluidity of the watercolors is so beautiful, so fresh. Don't lose that!!!!! I have, and am trying to get back to it.
You did a GREAT job!!!

Re: March 2013 Watercolor Challenge - Tulips

2nd attempt for this challenge. Don't have Permanent Rose which would have looked better but used Winsor Red. Will have to buy some Perm Rose soon. Edges bled a bit when I added blue in the neg areas - the scanner didn't seem to pick up the light blue wash. Made one tulip starting to open.

Awww, thank you Artcat! (blush) I would like to get so much technically better but I can see an advantage to being fresh to the medium too ... I wonder how people approach this?

That Winsor Red is a beautiful vibrant colour Barbara.

Maybe strengthen the leaves a little.

Re: March 2013 Watercolor Challenge - Tulips

Blake, If I knew the answer to that question, I'd bottle it.

One idea I've considered is to try painting with my non-dominant hand, and at arm's length from the paper, or paint an image that's upside down. This would relinquish the brain control, and leave the water and paint more to serendipitous flow and bloom.

Seeing your lovely rendition prompted me to pull a book off the shelves which I bought awhile ago, but never studied. It's Judy Whitton's book, "Loosen up your Watercolors." This may be of help, as she paints VERY loosely! I'm going to follow some of her techniques and exercises...will let you know how that goes!
In the meantime, if anyone else has some guidance or tips for this question, please post!

Maybe there are some threads and challenges about this struggle here on WetCanvas?!!!

-Looking forward to seeing more of your work!

Barbara and Emilia, I like the brilliant reds in your paintings. Barbara even though you said you had trouble with the wrap I think you captured the texture of the wrap quite well. The highlights showed the shine of the smooth plastic paper. I'm hoping to finish my tulips and post today. I have seeds to plant, rooms to clean, potpie broth to make, rugs to shampoo, on and on and on, and it's all going to have to be put on hold today. I"M PAINTING!

This is a collective reply to Rachel, Blake, Barbara and Emilia:
I love your painting style! And how you used the petals' colors! So vibrant.

Emilia, your foil looks great! You captured the shine so well.
