My poor experience with selling prints through liscensing.
A few years ago I decided to approach print licensing companies to sell prints of my art work through them. At the time it seemed like a good direction for me to go, as I thought it would be a good way to increase my art income. Now several years later I wish I had never done it. : ( The company that i went with, was a well established one. They told me that my work would be sold mainly to "framers" and I envisioned it hanging in gift shops, etc. for sale. What I found instead was that it was put all over the internet for sale, ranging from inexpensive prints on Ebay, Amazon, Sears, Walmart, etc. sites to much higher framed prints on other large sites also. Since I also sell originals of my work, I was not happy to find the cheap prints available all over the place. : ( I never made much money from this venture and now after the contract period is over, I am spending a lot of time contacting sites that still have my work up for sale as print on demand type prints. It has been a very frustrating experience. I want to tell other artist to please think long and hard before making such a decision.
