Talking Long time no paint. Critiques welcome!

Hello,

It's been a while since I painted a large painting in oils and I actually did this one over 6 months! (I wander in and out of painting mood and around different media all the time )
So.. I always had something for dark colours and low key palettes. This time I decided to go for some happy colours. I would appreciate some feedback on this as I tend to get tired from paintings at this stage. (love to start new paintings )

Thanks in advance.

Very nicely done. Too bad you don’t paint more often. This is lovely.

Really nice.
I wonder what darker /stronger shadowing right under the objects would do, maybe to seat them a little more?
Seems light is coming from the left side? so extending the cast shadows to the right..

You might test it on a copy of the photo with an editing program, or look at similar images to compare..

I found this image that might be helpful - on a free to use site-

WC also has a still life forum that might have more tips -

Re: Long time no paint. Critiques welcome!

Thank you so much, Enelram! I definitely need to go back to painting more.

JMW, I was wondering the same thing! I wanted to darken the right side of the vase a little bit. Same thing about the shadows. Maybe I should glaze it once it's dry?

Thanks for the photo. The one I based my painting on was pretty blurred; I had to work out all the details by myself.

I will post it again in the Still Life forum to ger more opinions, thank you!

Onestrokeartist, thank you very much for your lovely comment. Thanks for stopping by.

I find this super useful when I struggling with complex value situations. You hold it up to the subject and find the value then compare that to what you have on the canvas. Also used to compare values on different parts of the canvas. You'll be surprised how much our eyes trick us! https://www.dickblick.com/products/g...-value-finder/

Re: Long time no paint. Critiques welcome!

Even a good camera/photo ref won't show the full range of colors/values that our eyes can see, so at some point we need to imagine how to enhance our paintings.
Sometimes finding similar images that may have better lighting or sharpness helps to show variations or trigger the imagination..

@Kram; this tool looks very useful. I might make it forfuture use.

@JMW, I think I need to polish my colour theory skills in order to improvise in situations where the photo doesn't provide the necessary information. I

@Kostas, Thanks so much
