Pride of Lemont

The SK-3 was built for mechanic, Rudy A. Kling from Lemont, Illinois as his personal racing aircraft. The Menasco C6-S was modified by Kling to produce 400 hp , and could attain over 300 mph. Kling only had 150 hours of flying time. He won the 1937 Greve race and the 1937 Thompson trophy. He crashed in the 1938 Miami air races killing him at the age of 29.

The base drawing for this digital painting. Also the wire frame 3D I created to use for the plane drawing.

Re: Pride of Lemont

Another nice piece of work about something i had not heard of.The pilot had only 150 hours of experience in charge of this high speed aircraft. To me this doesn't look like a particularly stable aircraft either.

Re: Pride of Lemont

I don't think any of the race planes were particularly stable. He died doing what he loved. He must have had some skill having won two other races. I think he got caught in the turbulence of another aircraft. Sometimes it's just bad luck.
Thanks for the comment Trumper.
