My first serious scratchboard piece. The image quality isn't that good, but I can't seem to get scratchboard to scan that well.

Nice work. I like your crosshatching but It does seem to be a lot of the 'same value'

This is stunning!! I came into this thread and just saw the top of the picture - it look like lots of random scratches and I thought "What on earth is that?!" Then I scrolled down to be charged at by your powerful pachyderm. Wonderful!!

The randomness of the scratches also indicates the texture of the skin. I have never tried scratchboard, but I think I might give it a go now. Did you plan it out first with sketches and tonal studies?

I used a reference picture I found at an Elephant enthusiast's site. Other than sketching a rough outline with chalk onto the scratchboard I just started crosshatching.

I absolutely love this one. It's so 3D looking! How do you lay down your design on scratchboard before you begin? I've never tried it
