One step closer!

I've always wanted to do one of those close up cat portraits that so many of you have done but I never had the right reference. I wanted to use one of my own and I finally got the perfect one. This is Assiqua, a female Sumatran Tiger in our local (Adelaide) zoo and I caught her licking her lips as she looked at me. Note how the whiskers on her right are all pushed up by her tongue.

So, this is 20" x 16" and is 80% fibreglass brush, 15% steel wool to get the backlit areas and 5% blade to get the whiskers and hairs at the edge. In reality there were no highlights in the eyes but I used artistic license there. The highlights took less than ten seconds and really added some life I think

My scanner's not cooperating so you'll have to make do with a photo.

Re: One step closer!

Well you know I don't like cats Patrick!!! So i don't like this. LOL. Just joking. I love it. You should do more kitties.

I know you didn't ask for C & C's but I know you won't mind if I offer it.

There is such strong lighting coming from the left which would suggest the left eye might be lighter than the right but they are both the same. Also, I think the mane on the shadow side should be darker. The white are not much different on either side of the face apart from the highlight on the left mane. Same goes for the chin. Should be lighter on the left.

Not sure what to say about the tongue. Maybe the long teeth need to be a bit brighter. The tongue is really bright but there is not light hitting it inside.

I think if you can make these small adjustments, to my eye anyway, then this is going to be absolutely beautiful. Just my twopeneth worth.

Re: One step closer!

Many thanks Sno

I know totally what you mean Lesley. I'll offer a couple of observations though. My photograph of my art has unfortunately made the mane on the right look similar to the bright one on the left. In reality, there is quite a stark difference so I'm comfortable with it. However the eyes are interesting. While I would have said exactly what you said about them, in actual fact the left eye (our right) which should be darker is actually lighter in the reference, probably from some reflected light that is outside the shot. I've simply evened them out. The teeth and chin are in darkness more or less. I think my picture of the art is again letting it down here - if you can see the lower portion of the right mane (our left), that portion has quite a bit of darkness in it which makes the chin and teeth make sense but unfortunately my photo has washed the mane out too much. Like I say, I need to scan it or get a better photo, but I love your thoughts because they've made me think more.

Re: One step closer!

Hiya Tracey, many thanks

Lesley, I reckon you are right on the chin. Even though it is darkish in my ref, I think I'll bring in some wisps of light hairs to add some life to that area.

Re: One step closer!

Also - those teeth are great. It is so easy to make teeth too obvious and phony.

Re: One step closer!

Beautiful work Patrick, both catching a great pose with your camera and putting it on the board. I like it a lot. You always do great eyes, one of my worse skills. I can't argue with Lesley, she knows her stuff. I'd give a lot just for a chance to watch her work on a board for a while. l'd do that for you as well. You have no idea how disappointed I was when our next door accommodations fell through in California. Anyway, that's why I like to do rocks and trees, they pretty much take care of themselves. I just have to sit quietly and supervise them. Ha. Glad to hear you put this on a big board. How'd you like it?

Re: One step closer!

Linda found the right word "Stunning", though Terri's word is a close second "Wowsie!"

I love it!
